Anxiety entered my life after a car accident. I seemed fine physically, but soon crippling anxiety and panic attacks sent me spiraling into discouragement and shame. I learned quickly that the only way to the other side was to walk through it—but not alone. That journey pushed me to lean on what I already knew to be true about God in a new way—like my life depended on it.

There are three key attributes of God that anxiety forced me to rely on more deeply than ever before. Despite my fears (and yours), I learned on a whole new level that our unchangeable, all-powerful, all-knowing God never trembles. Considering these central attributes of God when I was afraid (and when you are) reminded me that we serve a God who is fully in control: omnipotent, omniscient, and filled with omnibenevolence.

These attributes may be somewhat familiar, but I pray they’ll become a steady buoy for you, providing direction amid the chaotic sea.

God’s Omnipotence

Omnipotence means God is “all-powerful.” He is distinct from creation as the sovereign ruler with unlimited power consistent with His nature (Eph. 1:11). As the Creator of everything, He has complete power over all He has made. We see God displaying His unlimited power not only in creating (Gen. 2:1; John 1:3; Psalm 148:3–5; Heb. 11:3) but in upholding creation by the word of His power (Col. 1:17; Heb. 1:3). The elements of nature are submissive to Him (Matt. 8:27; John 6:15–21).

He has complete power over life and death (Deut. 32:39; 1 Sam. 2:6), and they submit to Him (Acts 17:25; John 5:21; John 11:44). The laws of nature bend when He chooses to move miraculously, like we see with the virgin birth (Isa. 7:14), or the miraculous signs of restoring bodies riddled with disease (Matt. 9:27–31). He has authority over demonic powers (Matt. 8:28–29, 32; Col. 2:15) and will destroy the devil’s works (1 John 3:8; Rev. 20:10). God’s authority spans all things visible and invisible. All things are under His rule.

Knowing that God is omnipotent should help us in two ways: first, to strengthen our faith in His abilities now; and second, to help us hope in His divine justice later. Jeremiah 32:17 says, “Oh, Lord GOD! You yourself made the heavens and the earth by your great power and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you!”

Since God is above all things, we can trust Him. Our circumstances are not out of His control. Each detail that has us trembling is under His control and will be used as a part of His divine purpose in our lives. If He wants us to suffer, He has promised as the omnipotent One to exert His power as our protector-guide on this journey. It’s freeing to know that God is all-powerful, and anxiety is not.

We can also trust the divine justice of our omnipotent King. It can be discouraging when we suffer because of circumstances that are out of our control or even in our control. Scripture tells us that suffering, for righteousness’ sake, means that we can entrust ourselves to Him who judges righteously (1 Pet. 2:23). God has promised to restore His children by rewarding them for their perseverance (Rom. 2:6–7). When the final judgment comes, we can confidently rest in the perfect judgment of God, as we do not boast in our righteousness but entirely hide ourselves in the righteousness of Christ.

God’s Omniscience

Not only is God omnipotent, but He is also omniscient. Omniscience means that God is “all-knowing” and nothing can surprise Him about the past, present, or future. Our Eternal, Divine God knows everything simultaneously. He never grows in understanding but knows the beginning and the end just the same. He knows all things (1 John 3:18–20), and there is no limit to His wisdom (Psalm 17:5).

Oh, the depth of the riches
and the wisdom and the knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgements
and untraceable his ways!
For who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?
And who has ever given to God,
that he should be repaid?
For from him and through him
and to him are all things.
To him be the glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33–36)

God’s intelligence cannot be held or contained because there is no end to its depth. He has no counselor that He looks to for advice (Job 36:22–23; Isa. 40:13–14). He owes nothing to anyone because He is the sole source of His knowledge. He knows every detail of our lives—our actions (Psalm 139:2), our hearts (1 Kings 8:39), and even our anxious thoughts (Psalm 139:24). While in the womb (Psalm 139:15–17), he counts every hair on our head and knows when a sparrow falls (Luke 12:7). David said, “You observe my travels and my rest; you are aware of all my ways” (Psalm 139:3).

Since God is all-knowing, He grasps the exhaustive details of our anxiety. He knows the full measure of our affliction. Anxious symptoms leave the mind tottering when the heart is beating, pounding, and irregular, and the Lord is not unaware. Not only is he privy to the full scope of our pain, but He is also compassionate toward us and the suffering we are going through (Psalm 56:8; Isa. 30:18).

God’s Omnibenevolence

God’s omnibenevolence means that He is “all-good.” Goodness is His nature, and it is reserved for Him alone (Mark 10:18; Matt. 19:17). Psalm 145:9 says, “The LORD is good to everyone; his compassion rests on all he has made.” God deals with His creation with love, goodness, and divine pity. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous (Matt. 5:45). He is willing to bless any who will accept His good and perfect gifts (James 1:17).

Again, I’d be willing to wager you probably already know these attributes of God. But I share them again because we anxious people can be so overwhelmed by our anxieties that these truths are easy to forget. Also, because all of these attributes wrapped up together mean something crucial: God is unafraid, which means He is the ideal Person to run to when you are afraid. There’s nothing in this universe that can threaten Him. He has no limits in His ability to help. He is the perfect Person to trust in your anxiety journey because He will never be busy dealing with His own.

This is who these anxious waves are thrusting you upon: the One who has all the power and who loves you dearly. If you need power to press through your journey, He is all-powerful. If you need the reminder that wrongs will one day be set right, He is all-just. If you need the wisdom to face each wave of anxiety in a godly way, He is all-wise. If you need someone to understand the full range of anxiety you feel today—the highs and the lows—He is all-knowing. If you need someone kind on the weak days and the reminder that this journey will not turn out for your harm, He is all-good.

You will go through bouts of fear. But your God is unafraid. He is higher than any mountain in your life. Unafraid of your needs. Unafraid of your natural fears. Unafraid of your worst fears. Unafraid of your sinful fears. He’s worth trusting in this journey. He has sufficient resources. His skill set brings peace to your division and calm to your quivering body.

If the anxiety never vanishes, we still praise Him. If we never slept well again, continued having stomach issues, always felt faint, couldn’t breathe properly, remained sensitive to light, couldn’t drive beyond an hour, or woke up each night with accidents or something else on the brain, we would still have a sovereign God by our side.

Before we go anywhere, we must start there by embracing the waves in our life. Why? Because it throws us upon our Rock of Ages. God is the Rock that will not crumble. God is the Rock that is our steady, immovable, unshakeable fortress. He alone is our rock and our salvation, our stronghold. And because He is in control of every wave in the ultimate sense, we will never be shaken (Psalm 62:2).
