Unlimited: God Did Not Reject His People

I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! (Romans 11:1a).

This is a question that has been asked since the crucifixion of Jesus: Have the Jewish people been rejected by God? Throughout history, some people have answered this question in a way that has made them be anti-Semitic. Other people have answered this question in a way that has made them convert to various forms of Judaism. What is the answer? Paul is going to explore the answer in this chapter.

But let’s ask a bigger question: Does God ever reject his people?

Psalm 94:14 tells us emphatically that:

…the Lord will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.

The Lord will not reject his people.

Paul has been quoting from the prophet Hosea. Consider the Lord’s anguished cry in that same book as he considers the rebellion of Israel:

Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows (Hos. 11:8.)

When we feel that God has rejected us, remember that that can never be.

However, while God will not reject us, we can reject him. The stone over which so many people stumble in Romans 9:33 is Jesus himself, the stone the builders (the Jewish people) rejected (Matt. 21:42; Acts 4:8–12.)

    Spiritual Application

Have you ever felt as if God had rejected you? Have you ever felt forgotten by God? Your feelings deceive you! What can you do today to prepare yourself for those difficult times, so that when you go through them you will be able to stay close to God?
