Unlimited: The Silence of Jesus

Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer (Mark 14:60–61, NIV).

As a skilled politician, the High Priest Caiaphas knew how to manipulate a situation. During Jesus’ trial, he held back and remained silent.

The accusations were all heard, focusing on Jesus’ statements about the temple. Through it all, Jesus remained in silent dignity.

The High Priest decided to dramatically intervene.

Why did Jesus refuse to answer the High Priest? Why did he refuse to respond to accusations made against him?

Jesus refused to recognise the authority of this court.

Jesus was also silent because there comes a point when there’s nothing more that can be said. Jesus had been teaching publicly for years, and he’d been teaching specifically in the temple, the heart of Jerusalem, during the last week.

They all heard what he had to say. And they already made their decision. Jesus doesn’t play games. Their chance to pull back from the brink had passed.

Jesus doesn’t speak to those who accuse him.

Eli’s Reflection: Could it be that in your heart you have accusations against God that are keeping him from speaking to you? Or perhaps you are trying to wrongfully impose your authority over him. What kinds of attitudes does God require from you so that he may reveal truth to you?

    The Mall or the Manger?

Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
