Vessels of Clay, Prepared unto Glory
In Romans 9:21 we are merely clay but God has made us “vessels unto honor.” The clay has no honor but God, full of honor, has become the content of the clay vessels. This is God’s mercy; we are “vessels of mercy.”
God’s intention in creating us as vessels is in Romans 9:23, “that He might make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He had before prepared unto glory.” It is a great mercy that we, who are merely clay, can be bearers of God’s glory. And whatever God does, He does abundantly; not merely glory but riches of His glory!
This glory is not merely a thing separate from God; it is a quality of His person, His shining. God is also life in us. By this life He is building together all the clay vessels to become His corporate house which eventually becomes His city, New Jerusalem.
By the time New Jerusalem appears, we will no longer be clay. “The Lord Jesus Christ will transfigure the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of His glory” (Phil. 3:21). New Jerusalem will not contain any clay; it is composed solely of precious materials, as described in Revelation 21:18-21.
This precious city will be the eternal vessel of God’s glory, a clear, transparent vessel (Rev.21:18, 21), through which the glory of God will radiate.
