We’re Found Innocent In The Eyes Of The Lord

When you stand before the Lord, will you be found guilty or innocent? Of what, you might ask? Will you be found guilty because of unrighteousness or innocent in His righteousness?

Declare me innocent, O God! Defend me against these ungodly people. Rescue me from these unjust liars. Psalm 43:1

The ungodly consider unrighteous people innocent. On the other hand, they would project the righteous as outcasts by conjuring ways to make them look guilty.

Some Bible scholars consider Psalms 42 and 43 as a single, unified psalm. Psalm 43 concludes with the same chorus that appears in the prior Psalm.

Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God! Psalm 43:5

We, however, will examine Psalm 43 on its own merit. It expresses a desire for God’s intervention to set things right. It also highlights the Psalmist’s faith in God’s justice and power.

We live in a world with a population of over eight billion people. Christians make up thirty percent of that number. Statistically speaking, only three out of ten people claim Christianity.

That means ungodly people grossly outnumber those who follow Christ. They may be religious or serve other gods, but we can identify when the Psalmist said the following.

For you are God, my only safe haven. Why have you tossed me aside? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies? Psalm 43:2

    Ungodly People Outnumber the Godly

In a world of the worldly, don’t you sometimes feel overwhelmed by ungodly philosophies and beliefs? Many of them accuse the church and its stance against sin of being a hate group.

God, though, has found us innocent of their charges. He has offered Himself as a haven of safety for all who run to Him. He doesn’t toss us aside, He welcomes us in. Take refuge in the Lord.

    • This I declare about the Lord:
    • He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.
    • For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.
    • He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings.
    • His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91:2-4

So, even though the ungodly far outnumber us, we have nothing to fear. God shelters and protects us. He declares us innocent when our adversaries think they have found us guilty.

    Guidance

In the next few verses, the Psalmist focuses on God’s guidance. Spiritual darkness surrounds us, so he asked the Lord to dispel the darkness with His light. God is in the light shining business.

Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me. Psalm 43:3

    • Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12
    • If we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7

    Holiness

Continuing, the Psalmist asked the Lord for guidance. In the Old Testament, God led the children of Israel into the Promised Land. In the New Testament, He leads us to our eternal home.

Let them lead me to your holy mountain, to the place where you live. Psalm 43:3

    • When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. John 16:13-14

The Innocent Found Their Joy In the Lord

The Psalmist desired to enter into the presence of the Lord, the source of all joy. Through the Holy Spirit, God’s presence resides within us. Therefore, we should have joy all the time.

There I will go to the altar of God, to God—the source of all my joy. Psalm 43:4

    • Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Philippians 4:4-5
    • Remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! John 15:10-11

One Psalm says, “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise.” God desires our praise, whether we offer it a cappella or with instruments: even during difficult times.

I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God! Psalm 43:4

    • Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening . . . Suddenly, the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! Acts 16:25-26
    • I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” Revelation 5:13

    God Found the Righteous Innocent

These verses point to God’s holiness as we offer our praises to Him. And as a result, we receive the joy of the Lord. Then the Psalmist concluded with a declaration of hope found only in God.

Everything the Psalmist declared and sought after from God is fully available to all Christians today. Jesus removed our guilt of sin and shame, and God found us innocent of all charges.

Sometimes, we Christians allow our fears and emotions to fill our minds with doubt, which dampens our faith. For that reason, the Apostle Paul prayed the following prayer for us.

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Lord, in your justice, you have found us innocent of all our sins committed against you. You have cast our guilt out of your memory. Help us to forget it also, as we live for you.
