What can tithing do to me?
I give the church tithes, but what is in it for me?
If you are a new Christian, this could be your question. For a long time, some believers might still need to understand the value of tithing fully.
With all the expenses and debts we have to pay, could tithe benefit us, or could it just add to our burden?
Although some Christians begin to get uncomfortable when discussing money, we must be more open to knowing how to manage them properly.
Also, it is a way to understand how we could be a good steward of God’s resources.
Understanding tithing
First, we must understand tithing to value its importance in our life.
A tithe is ten percent of our income. This is a kind of worship and a way to honor the Lord.
Proverbs 3:9 says, “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops.”
Tithing is not just about what it could give to us but also about how we can show our obedience to God’s word.
Thus, God promises blessings and providence to those who obey His commands.
Moreover, we must understand that ten percent of everything we receive belongs to God and not to us. Leviticus 27:30 says, “A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.”
The said verses used gardening metaphors, but we must give a portion back to God, particularly a tenth of whatever we make.
Nevertheless, the Lord does not value the amount of that ten percent but how we honor Him and His words.
Tithing is an essential part of our faith. When you give your tithes before making a plan with the rest of your money, you show that you prioritize God’s command instead of an afterthought.
You give your “first fruits” instead of your “leftovers.”
What can tithing do to me
What is in it for us to give our tithes now that we know it is part of God’s command?
They say that if you want to know what is truly valuable to a person, you could see how he spends his money.
Here are some benefits when we try to be faithful in giving our tithes.
God is pleased
The Lord is pleased with those who obey Him faithfully and carefully, and giving our tithes means we follow what He commands us to do.
We are proving that we love Him because, despite our financial struggles, we are giving back what is due to Him.
If you love the Lord and want to pursue Him, we show it through giving ten percent of everything we receive.
We would do everything to make Him happy, just like what we do for our loved ones.
No matter how challenging tithing could be, we would do our best to offer it to God because we want to please Him.
When we honor God through our finances, we express our love toward Him.
More importantly, nothing is more satisfying than pleasing our Creator and the one who gives and owns everything.
Obeying brings blessings
Malachi 3:10 says, “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
God is pleased with those who love Him. He will give us favor and providence worth more than money.
Besides, there is always a blessing in obeying God, just as how we obey our parents. If our parents are pleased, they will reward us.
The same is true with our Heavenly Father. If we please Him by giving ten percent of our income, He will be more than glad to bless us more than we expect.
Moreover, God opens doors that no one can close and close doors that no one can open. The Lord, your God, will sustain you in everything you need.
Makes us responsible
God wants us to be responsible and accountable in everything He entrusts us, including how we handle our finances.
When we prioritize our tithes, it will help us to be organized and know which is more important than the others.
In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus Christ shared the Parable of the Talents. The was once a master who gave five talents to one of his servants, then two to the other, and one skill to another.
The man who had five talents went to trade them and made five more talents. Meanwhile, the one who gave two skills also multiplied them into two.
However, the man who had received the one talent dug in the ground and hid his master’s money.
The master returned after a long time and settled accounts with his servants. The two men who were able to multiply their talents were recognized as faithful over a little.
Their master invited them to be with him to share the joy of what they had done.
However, the one who dug his master’s money came and blamed his master for hiding it, so the master got mad.
The Parable of the Talents teaches us to responsibly use God-given gifts such as money. We are learning to give back what is due to the Lord and teach us how to save.
Free us from worries about money
Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
In the previous verses of Matthew Chapter 6, Jesus Christ asks why people are anxious about their clothing while even the birds in the sky are fed by God and lilies in the field grow without even toiling.
In addition, Jesus Christ emphasized that we are more valuable than the grass or birds, so we should not worry about what to eat, drink or wear.
However, we should seek first God’s kingdom and pursue His righteousness, and all our needs would be given.
Thus, giving our tithes is one way to show that we seek God first. When we set aside our tithes before disbursing our money to our expenses, God will free us from our worries because He will provide for everything.
God intervenes and allows us to be more satisfied with living on the 90% rather than 100%.
God will take control
We cannot control some things, like when we experience the Covid-19 pandemic.
Most business establishments shut down, and many people lose their jobs. Yet, God never leaves and forsakes those who are faithful to Him.
He sustains and protects them from sickness and the economic effect of the pandemic.
Also, if we are struggling with our finances yet still giving our tithes, you will see God’s wondrous work in our finances and every aspect of our lives.
He would work on your marriage and will bless your children.
Job 42:2 says, “I know that you can do all things and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”
He, faithful in walking in God’s righteousness, is confident that God can do all things and that nothing is impossible with Him.
