What Is True Spiritual Awareness?

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7
While the world may believe that “spiritual awareness” is getting to know oneself better, for a child of God it means getting to know Him better. As we journey through life, across challenging mountain ranges and through deep valleys of pain, our awareness of the Lord and of His strength should always be greater and more meaningful than our weakness or heart pain.
Spiritual awareness that honors the Lord and takes us into a deeper relationship with Him includes the following:
- I must be more attuned to His will than I am to my own preferences.
- I must exhibit the fruits of the Spirit rather than my own angst and worry.
- I must speak His Word over every difficulty and disappointment.
- I must fellowship with His promises rather than with my doubt.
Christians who are spiritually aware understand that what they “see” with their natural eyes is not the most authoritative aspect of life. There is a deep, peaceful understanding that God is working behind the scenes and that His ways are vastly different from the ways of this broken world. How wonderful to know that He is in charge and that I am His child!
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)
If you feel that your spiritual awareness is lacking, perhaps it is time for a readjustment. You can simply ask the Lord to make you more aware of Him and His plan than you are of your human desires. Spend some time in the Word and ask the Holy Spirit to bring Scriptures alive each time you open your Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His power and strength so that you can travel through life with the amazing awareness of His presence.
As you become more aware of the Lord’s goodness and His eternal truth, you will grow in your walk with Christ and align yourself with His wisdom. You will then fulfill your calling in God during every season in life.

Questions for Reflection:
1. What is your definition of the phrase “spiritual awareness”?
2. Who is the most spiritually aware person you know? What are some disciplines they have incorporated into their personal walk with Christ?
