What It Means to Be Rooted in God?

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."- Colossians 2:6-7

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to be rooted in God?

In our fast-paced world, losing sight of what's essential is easy. We get caught up in the daily hustle, chasing after what we think will give us fulfillment. But Colossians 2:6-7 invites us to pause and ponder a profound truth about our spiritual journey.

Being rooted in God resembles how a tree sinks deep into the earth. A tree with deep roots stands firm, draws nutrients, and thrives regardless of the weather. Similarly, when we root our lives in God, we find stability, nourishment, and growth in our faith.

But how do we live out being rooted in Christ? It starts with a simple yet life-altering decision to receive Christ Jesus as Lord. This is more than acknowledging Him; it’s about letting Him guide every aspect of our lives. When we do this, we build our lives on a foundation that cannot be shaken.

Being rooted in Him also means building and strengthening our faith. Think of this as building a house. You start with a solid foundation, then you add the walls, the roof, and finally, the interior.

Our spiritual lives are similar. We start with the foundation of Jesus, and then we build upon it through learning, growing, and experiencing God in our daily lives.

This building process isn’t always easy. There will be storms and challenges that threaten to shake us. But remember, a tree with deep roots can withstand even the fiercest storm. Similarly, when our faith is deeply rooted in Christ, we can withstand life's challenges.

Now, let’s talk about being ‘overflowing with thankfulness.’ This phrase is powerful. It suggests that a natural response is gratitude when we are deeply rooted in God. It's like when a tree bears fruit because it's healthy and well-nourished. Our spiritual fruit is thankfulness, manifesting in various forms like generosity, peace, and a deep sense of joy.

So, in practical terms, what does this look like day-to-day? It starts with small steps. Spend time daily in prayer, not just speaking but listening. Engage with the Bible, not just reading but reflecting on its meaning. Involve yourself in a faith community where you can grow and be encouraged.

Serve others, reflecting Christ’s love and compassion. And in everything, practice gratitude, recognizing the countless ways God is at work in your life.

Our roots grow deeper, and our faith strengthens as we do these things. The beauty of this journey is that it's not about reaching a destination. It's about growing more in love with Christ and more like Him each day.

So, being rooted in God is not just a concept; it's a way of life. It's about establishing a firm foundation in Christ, building upon it, and flourishing in gratitude. As we do this, our lives reflect the stability, strength, and joy of a deep-rooted relationship with God.

Sehnsucht in the Blue Ridge Mountains — Nicole O'Meara

Sehnsucht is hard to put into words, as can be seen in my painfully limited ability to describe what I felt at a vista in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some call it joy. Some called it wistful longing for something you can’t explain. It has been called melancholy and nostalgia. It is all of that, and mo
