Where is Your Mission?

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." -- Matthew 28:19

Every Christian is on a mission trip.

If you call on Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then according to Matthew 28:19, you are called “to make disciples.” In today’s language, we might say to be an instrument or a catalyst that helps others become believers of Christ Jesus. It’s known as the Great Commission. Fitting because the word, mission is in the word commission.

So, if we’re on a mission trip right now, what does that mean for our daily life? Do we all pack our bags and travel to a different part of the world to preach and teach about Jesus?

For some of us, yes. There are people, couples, and families Jesus is currently moving toward missions outside the parameters of their current way of life. But if that’s not you, then He has you on a mission right where you are.

If we think about our current circumstances being a mission trip, what does that mean for you?

If I’m honest, my daily life is fairly solitary. And if I’m being really honest, I like it that way. Last week, school was called off and my husband couldn’t work due to Hurricane Helene. We were all safe and under one roof. All was well, thank you, Jesus. But after four days, I was ready to have my lonesome hours with only my books, computer, and words again. So if my days are spent working from home, happily on a screen, then how can I possibly be on a mission for God?

For me, words are my mission. I preach, teach, show, guide, grow (hopefully) myself and others in the knowledge of Christ through my writing. And really, my words have the ability to reach so many more places than I could ever reach physically.

So where is your mission? Your workplace? Your family life? Your classmates? The young mom’s group you’re a part of? Your gym acquaintances? Your book club?

Paul asks rhetorically in Romans 10:13-14 “for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? (NIV)”

Who, then, is your they?

When we think like Paul, every event on our calendars becomes our mission ground. And King Jesus will use every one of them to grow His Kingdom if we let Him.

Question for Reflection:

Have you ever considered things that are close to home that could become your mission field? If so, what would it take to get that started?
