The Wolf And A Lamb In The Bible

Isaiah wrote that the wolf and the lamb will live together “in that day.” What day? In today’s chapter, the prophet laid out how something that unusual will happen.

In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all.” Isaiah 11:6

With access to cable tv and online streaming, we have the opportunity to see nature close up. We have learned that all species fit somewhere in the natural order of the food chain.

Look back at our verse for today for a moment. The lamb, goat, and calf are each on the lower end of the food chain. While the wolf, leopard, and loin all rank close to the top.

The Bible says that the present food chain among animals will cease to exist. Why? How will that happen?  When will “that day” be?

When will the Wolf and the Lamb Live Together?

What the prophet described can only be the Millennium. The 1000-year reign of Christ. The time when Jesus rules the earth along with His saints.

Isaiah began this chapter by indicating that, “that day” starts with the seed out of the lineage of David. That seed is Jesus!

Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. Isaiah 11:1

Characteristics of Christ

Then he went on to describe some of the characteristics of Jesus. He listed them in three categories. The first one spoke of Christ’s relationship with His Spirit.

Second, he mentioned His humanitarian traits. Then the prophet described the power of Jesus and its effects.

His Spirit

  • And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him.
  • The Spirit of wisdom and understanding.
  • The Spirit of counsel and might.
  • And the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11:2

The Humanitarian Traits of Christ

  • He will delight in obeying the Lord.
  • He will not judge by appearance.
  • Nor make a decision based on hearsay.
  • He will give justice to the poor.
  • And make fair decisions for the exploited. Isaiah 11:3-4

His Power

  • The earth will shake at the force of his word.
  • And one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked.
  • He will wear righteousness like a belt.
  • And truth like an undergarment. Isaiah 11:4-5

Jesus has already come to the earth once and He will come again. Even though He’s always had all of the characteristics described by Isaiah, each of His earthly roles differ.

Let me explain what I’m talking about. First coming as a newborn baby, He came to serve. Next, He will come riding on a white horse as a conquering warrior.

Then during His 1000-year reign, He’ll take on another role. This time He will rule over all the earth.

As the prophet Isaiah continued, he said little children would lead animals they would normally fear. After which he spoke of more things we would consider unnatural.

The cow will graze near the bear. The cub and the calf will lie down together. The lion will eat hay like a cow. The baby will play safely near the hole of a cobra. Yes, a little child will put its hand in a nest of deadly snakes without harm. Isaiah 11:7-8

In other words, these things won’t just sporadically happen. They will become the new norm during the 1000-year reign of Christ. The wolf and the lamb will live together.

If you follow the news concerning the Middle East, it seems like conflict constantly plagues the entire region. But during the Millennium that will all change.

Nothing will hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, for as the waters fill the sea, so the earth will be filled with people who know the Lord. Isaiah 11:9

What Does the Wolf and a Lamb have to do with Me?

Wolf and Lamb

So, we might want to ask ourselves why is this information important to us. Because only those who share in the first resurrection will reign with the Lord during these 1000 years.

Made up of two groups of people, John the Revelator revealed to us who those people are. One group consists of all those caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years. Revelation 20:6

The other group consists of those put to death during the seven-year tribulation. Their deaths are a direct result of their testimony for Christ.

And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for proclaiming the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his statue, nor accepted his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They all came to life again, and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Revelation 20:4

Live for Jesus Now!

Make it your goal to live for Jesus now so you’ll be raptured when He calls the church home. Paul said the dead in Christ will rise and then be joined by those alive in Him

The only other alternative happens after the rapture of the church when the seven-year tribulation begins. During that time people will have one of two choices.

Choose Christ so You Will See the Wolf and Lamb Living Together

One of the choices involves taking the mark of the beast. Those who do may buy and sell and pay their bills and live openly. But in the end, they will not make it to heaven.

During that time some will turn to Christ. They must refuse, however, to take the mark of the beast and they must proclaim their testimony. They will die by decapitation.

I have to say, living for Christ today will be much easier than dying for Him during the tribulation.

Lord, thank you for your promise of salvation. We know the day is getting closer when you call the church home. Help us to be an effect witnesses in drawing others to you.
