How to become lucky in life; Is there such a thing as luck?

Most of us feel lucky when life is good, but we think it is bad luck when life does not seem on track. But is there such a thing as luck? What does God’s words say about it?

Luck means experiencing success and failure by chance. People love to say “good luck” to wish others to do good or get what they desire. Many people believe in luck probably because they have experienced it or know someone who encountered luck.

However, it may not seem like a big concern, but it is for Christians to say and believe that things occur to them by chance without God’s hand being a part of it. 

What does the Bible say about luck?

As far as God and His Scripture is concerned, God already knows everything that happens to us. God’s word teach a man not to believe in luck because it is arbitrary and unpredictable. God does not change, and His plans are not based on chance.

In addition, Christians shouldn’t believe in luck because it would only take our faith in God. Also, chance makes us think that God does not control what is happening in life. 

Romans 8:28 says we know that everything works for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose.

Also, the Bible says that every good and perfect gift is from above. It comes down from the Father, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17)

Why should I not rely on luck?

There are some reasons why we should depend our lives on luck. Though many believe in it, God is the most reliable source to lean on when experiencing good things. 

Here are some reasons why we should base our future on God other than luck.

It takes God out of the picture

When we believe in luck, we depend on something that could make us lucky such as jewelry, stones, and more. We value these things so much that we might forget to trust God rather than lucky charms.

Moreover, it gives no room for God to work in your life since you depend more on chances than His promises. 

Additionally, they say that luck is a way to try to explain things without involving God in the discussion. It competes with God’s power. But, even if the lot is cast into the lap, every decision from the Lord. (Proverbs 16:33)

Luck does not exist

Luck means things that occur to someone by chance. It is an accidental way of getting good or bad things without planning. There is no such as happening by accident or without design. 

When God made the world, He did not rely on chances. He took control and worked and was satisfied with everything He had worked for.  Genesis 1:31 says that God saw everything he had made and beheld it. He saw that everything was good.

Besides, people only get successful with hard work. Even God worked hard in His creation and rested on the seventh day. Life is not simply waiting for it to be beautiful just because we are lucky without perseverance and dedication.

People who are experiencing good life are not being lucky. They work hard for it through God’s help, not by chance.

Luck is a form of idolatry

If we believe in luck, we depend on something instead of God. We have so many lucky charms that people rely on when they are expecting good things to happen. Some may do rituals to avoid bad luck instead of praying for God’s guidance to deliver them from evil.

Consequently, people hold on to those hand-made things that give them luck rather than holding on to God’s promises. Eventually, it becomes a form of idolatry. Psalms 115:1:4 says people’s idols are silver and gold, those works of human hands.\

In God’s eyes, luck is just a meaningless wooden idol that tempted the Israelites. 

What about bad luck?

If people lose their job, experience poverty, or lose their loved ones, does it mean they have bad luck?

If you feel stagnant in life or you may not have a happy home, was it all bad luck?

Some people say they do not have luck because of all the things happening to them. But, again, there’s no such thing as by chance. Whatever bad things we are experiencing could be the consequences of our wrong decisions or God’s trial; it is not bad luck.

One good example is a hardworking man who got rich but became addicted to gambling. Unconsciously, he was already wasting all his money and had nothing. Was it bad luck? No, it is the consequences of his actions.

Furthermore, was it bad luck if you were affected by inflation and lost your job? No, it is God’s trial for you to trust Him that everything works together for good to those He loves Him. God opens doors that no one can close and closes doors that no one can open. (Revelations 3:7)’

Things to do instead of relying on luck

If luck does not exist and competes with God’s ability to take control, what must we do instead of relying on luck?

Here are some things we can do to help us succeed without depending on luck.

Trust in God, not in luck

Rather than depending on our life and future on luck, we must learn to trust God and allow Him to be in control. We should learn how to attract God’s favor than luck that does not exist.

Proverbs 24:3-4 says that it is by wisdom that a house is built. By understanding, it is established, and knowledge fills the rooms with all precious and pleasant riches.

The blessings come through wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, not by luck or random chance. God wants us to depend upon these attributes that He is the one that provides, not “luck.”

Even more, when we trust the Lord with all our heart,  do not lean on our understanding, and acknowledge him in all our ways, he will make our paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Have strong faith in God

Faith can move mountains. Faith makes us do things we do not even realize we can.

“He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” – Matthew 17:20-21

Jesus Christ was telling this verse to his disciples. There is nothing impossible with God to those who have faith in Him. Jesus is powerful, and that is all we need, not luck. A Christ-centered life would help us strengthen our faith.

Jesus, unlike luck, is sure and steadfast. He has come to save us and sustain us in all our needs.

Work hard to have a better life

“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23 

Some people say it is okay if you were born poor but not to die poor. God is so generous in giving us resources, talents, and skills so we can use them to improve our lives. Our faith is our foundation for working hard and achieving our goals and God’s plan of having an abundant life.

We must not depend on a lottery to get rich.
