As a believer in Jesus Christ, are you fully aware how much God has lavished His love on you? Scripture informs us that believers are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). These blessings which exemplify God’s extravagant love also describe our new identity in Christ. Let’s delve into each of these spiritual blessings so that we may truly cherish our heavenly Father’s love and grasp our new identity in Christ.

6 Spiritual Blessings in Christ

1. Chosen

“For He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before Him” (Ephesians 1:4 CSB).

God chose us to live for Him, to be holy as He is holy, to reflect Him everywhere we go (I Peter 1:15-16, 2 Corinthians 3:18). Friend, He chose you and drew you to Himself.  Ponder on that for a moment. You have been chosen by God Almighty, the Creator of this entire world, to be set apart as His treasured possession. This was His plan before the creation of the world.

When we truly comprehend the depths of our Father’s love, we willingly accept His invitation to live holy and blameless. Living in this manner is only possible by daily yielding to the Holy Spirit. Then through our obedience, we in turn prove our love for the Father (John 14:15).

2. Adopted

“He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace that He lavished on us in the Beloved One” (Ephesians 1:5-6 CSB).

Second, He granted us the privilege of becoming children of God (I John 3:1a). If you are a parent, you desire what is best for your children and love them unconditionally. This is how our heavenly Father loves us, except His love is absolutely perfect. Nothing we do can cause Him to love us more, and nothing can cause Him to love us less. Plus, He is always working on our behalf so that we may be conformed into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:28-29).

According to the Tyndale New Testament Commentary, “Men and women were created for life in fellowship with God, as children with the Father.”

Our heavenly Father desires fellowship with us, for us to regularly spend time communing with Him. Friend, He delights in you and takes pleasure in you (Psalm 147:11, Zephaniah 3:17b). What extravagant love!

3. Redeemed and 4. Forgiven

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace that He richly poured out on us with all wisdom and understanding” (Ephesians 1:7-8 CSB).

Third, we have been redeemed with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ death on the cross liberated us from the penalty and enslaving power of sin. Scripture further proclaims, “consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:11).

Because of this, His love compels me to live a surrendered life of obedience to the One who set me free.

Not only have I been redeemed, but all my sins are forgiven. God remembers my sin no more due to Jesus’ sacrifice on my behalf. This means that my past no longer defines me. Even when I fail to obey and yield to my flesh, He still forgives me. All I have to do is confess my sin and repent. Then I am forgiven and cleansed from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9). Thank You, Lord!

5. Heir

“In Him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of His will, so that we who had already put our hope in Christ might bring praise to His glory” (Ephesians 1:11-12 CSB).

Fifth, believers in Jesus Christ have been granted eternal life (John 3:16). This means an eternal home in heaven awaits us. Our heavenly Father is preparing a place for us to dwell with Him forever. A place of “no more death or sorrow or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4).

Plus, our future is secure no matter what happens in this world. Nothing compares to such an inheritance!

6. Sealed

In Him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed. The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:13-14 CSB).

Lastly, to remind us of our eternal inheritance, believers have been given the Holy Spirit. Because the Spirit dwells in us, God is always with us. We are carriers of His presence wherever we go so that we may glorify His name. What an incredible privilege!

Furthermore, the Holman New Testament Commentary states that, “God seals, or marks, His children with the Holy Spirit, indicating that we are His and that we are under His protection”.

Friend, God has you in the palm of His hand. He is always watching over you, for you are His.

Remembering Our Spiritual Blessings

Remember that you are chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, an heir and sealed. Write these spiritual blessings down. Place them in your Bible or somewhere you can easily access them. When the enemy tempts you to doubt God’s love, refer to these blessings. Declare them aloud to reaffirm God’s love and your identity in Christ.

How richly blessed and dearly loved we are, friend! What’s more, absolutely nothing can separate us from God’s extravagant love (Romans 8:35-39). We are His, forever! Friend let’s rejoice and give praise to our awesome God.

Father, thank You for lavishing Your love upon me. I humbly offer my life as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You. Forgive me for the times I have chosen to live my own way. May I be quick to repent when the Spirit convicts me of any sin. Help me to prioritize fellowship with You, for only You can truly satisfy my soul. Let Your will be done in me, for I desire to give You glory. You alone are worthy of all glory, honor and praise. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
