A New Look at Scars
Encouragement
Do you have any scars? Some scars are physical, while others are emotional. I have scars on my knees from a childhood fall that required a body cast for six months. I also have scars on my stomach from surgeries. My biggest emotional scar is from the death of my son many years ago.
Scars remind us of the struggles we faced. They hold memories for us. And despite our wounds, we continue to grow. Some scars even become a badge of courage.
Scars as a Testimony
We can use our scars as a testimony of what Christ has done in our lives. They are physical evidence of the power of our redeeming and saving Lord. They serve as a badge of honor in the kingdom. Our scars show the world the truth of Genesis 50:20 (NIV): “You meant to harm me, but God intended it for good to save many lives.”
In the Bible, we learn that Jesus’ body still had scars from his crucifixion even after He rose from the grave. Thomas, the disciple, said he would only believe that Jesus had risen if he saw the scars. In John 20:27 (NIV), Jesus told Thomas to touch His hands and side to stop doubting and believe. The scars were proof of Christ’s death and resurrection, and they can also help us believe.
Scars of Sin
There is another type of scar that comes from the sins in our life. Christ offered Himself as our sacrifice, as mentioned in 1 Peter 1:19, “like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” When we accept Him as our Savior, the blood of Christ washes away the mark of sin from our life. His scars will heal our scars - physical, emotional, and spiritual.
Jesus’ scars serve as a visible reminder of the sacrifice He made for us. They also assure us that through His own suffering, Christ understands our painful scars. When we reach our heavenly home, Jesus’ scars will remain while ours will disappear for all eternity.
Question for Reflection:
Do you have any physical or emotional scars that remind you of the tremendous sacrifice that Jesus made for you?
