A Prayer for a Friend Going Through a Divorce

Written by: Marianne White

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”
- Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Divorce is a painful and challenging experience, leaving deep emotional wounds and a sense of loss. It’s a time when our friends need our love, support, and understanding more than ever.

This verse reminds us that God is near to those who are hurting, offering comfort and strength in their time of need.

He doesn't just observe our pain from afar, He draws near to us, offering solace and hope. His closeness is a source of comfort and security, reminding us that we are never truly alone, no matter how isolated we may feel.

He understands our sorrow, and He is ready to carry us through the difficult journey of healing.

We can come to Him not only as our God but also as someone who understands our pain on a personal level.

Lean into God’s love, trust that He is near and working to restore us, even  when our spirit feels shattered. He is the one who can restore our hearts, provide peace, and renew our strength when we feel crushed by life’s circumstances

When a friend is going through a divorce, they may feel overwhelmed by grief, anger, loneliness, and sometimes even guilt. They might question their decisions or feel uncertain about their future. In moments like these, prayer can serve as a source of comfort, reassurance, and strength, reminding them that they are not alone.

In times of hardship, prayer is a powerful way to show that you are standing with your friend, offering emotional and spiritual support.

Though divorce is difficult, it is also an opportunity for healing, growth, and new beginnings. Through prayer, your friend may find strength to not only survive this trial but emerge from it with a deeper sense of peace, clarity and resilience.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I came before you today on behalf of my friend, who is going through a divorce. I know this is a painful and difficult time for them, and I ask for your comfort and strength to be with them.

I ask you to surround them with your love and peace in this difficult time. Wrap your comforting arms around them, and remind them that they are not alone, even when the world seems overwhelming.

Lord, I pray for healing for their hearts. I ask that you mend the broken places within them. Help them to process their pain, not with bitterness or resentment, but with grace and compassion. Grant them the strength to forgive where forgiveness is needed and to release any burdens that prevent them from moving forward.

May they always remember that they are beautifully and wonderfully made, and that their value is not diminished by the end of this marriage.Help them to trust in your plan, even when they cannot see the full picture. Give them the courage to face each day with hope and faith that you will provide for them.

Help them to let go of the things they cannot control and to place their trust in your timing and will. Lord, I pray for their comfort for their family, especially if there are children involved. Bring peace and unity, and allow them to move forward with mutual respect and care for one another.

Divorce can feel  like the end of so many dreams and promises, but Lord, remind them that you are a God of new beginnings. I know you have great plans for their future, plans to prosper them and not to harm them.

I ask that you bring people into their life who will support, encourage, and uplift them. Surround them with a community that speaks life and positivity into their situation, offering practical help as well as emotional and spiritual support.

Lord, help them to release any guilt or shame they may feel. Remind them that they are not defined by their past, and that you offer them with your grace, and a future filled with your promises.

May they walk in your light, trusting in your love, and knowing that they are with them every step of the way.

In Jesus Name, I pray, Amen.
