A Recovering Perfectionist's Imperfect Prayer - Grit & Grace

A recovering perfectionist’s imperfect prayer…

You ask me to come.

Weary and burdened, to come.

You will give me rest,

and so I offer my prayer:  this recovering perfectionist’s imperfect prayer.

Filtered prayers flow,

making sure the right words are

rolling off my tongue.

Hesitant, reluctant, unsure, and comparing.

“Right words must be used”

is the perfectionist’s cry.

Best are the words others say.

What makes a word “best” anyway?

The words others say

are eloquent and worthy

of my Father’s ears.

The whispers from the Enemy grow louder.

Why do I forget?

Eloquence and platitudes

are not what you want.

Remember Truth, dear one.

Stuttering, stumbling.

My brokenness is a bridge,

not a barrier.

The quest for what’s unattainable

(and not even required of me)

fools me into thinking otherwise.

Your brokenness came

so that perfection didn’t

need to be from me.

It never could, as I was bought with a price I could never pay.

My mumbling cries are

a sweet melody to you.

Songs of the broken.

Songs of the imperfect you have made whole.

Beautifully broken.

That’s what we are; what I am.

Imperfect prayers.

Prayers to ears that are always listening.

My prayers are safe.

With you, there’s no need to hide.

Imperfect embraced.

You’ve asked me to come, and so I’m here.

Uttering prayers.

No need to get them just right.

Time for me to rest.

Can I, though?

Even this prayer,

it is plagued with the poison:

perfectionism.

It grips my heart so very tightly.

I’ll cling to your Truth.

My heart is what you’re after.

Won’t be turned away.

So here it is, this recovering perfectionist’s imperfect prayer.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28

Any other recovering perfectionists out there?

Same Words, New Home - Grit & Grace

This little corner of the internet has felt a little one-sided for the last year or so (me no likey), so I’ve been looking for ways to make it more interactive, curating a space that’s more conversation and less monologue in a microphone. I may have found a solution. Starting in the next week or two, you’ll notice a few changes to my blog and newsletter as I move it over to Substack. This platform provides the option for us to not only comment and interact with each other, but also to archive and access older issues of grit & grace notes so you don’t have to dig through your inbox, in case you miss a few. The biggest change is this site – www.grit-andgrace.com – will no longer be the space where any new words or updates from me will be published. Here’s what will be the same: all issues of grit & grace notes will come right to your inbox every week to two weeks (keeping that publishing schedule a little flexible right now). You don’t need to do a thing. You’ll still get the same weekly/bi-weekly content, as well as other writing/book updates, and longer-form essays and articles as those are published. BUT if you want to add to the discussion or access old issues, those will be there waiting for you as well. I’m really excited about this change, and I hope it adds value to your inbox. Click the link below to give the new format a sneak peek grit & grace notes preview Here at the intersection of the grit and grace of faith,Becky If you find my words meaningful and would like to support my work, you can do so here or here with my deepest gratitude. Remember – God uses the grit and grace to grow us beautifully!
