A River of Water of Life from the Throne
New Jerusalem has “a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb in the middle of its street” (Rev. 22:1).
The throne of God and of the Lamb, one throne for both God and the Lamb, signifies that God and the Lamb are one—the Lamb-God, the redeeming God, God the Redeemer. In eternity, the God who will sit on the throne is our redeeming God, from whose throne proceeds the river of water of life for our supply and satisfaction. This depicts how the Triune God—God, the Lamb, and the Spirit (symbolized by the water of life)—dispenses Himself into His redeemed ones under His headship (implied by the throne) for eternity.*
This dispensing is not unique to New Jerusalem in eternity. It began with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. By His death He released the divine life from within His being, as symbolized by the water flowing from His pierced side in John 19:34. Then in resurrection He imparted this life into us to regenerate us (1 Peter 1:3).
Day by day He is our life and our life supply. Because He flows into us, He also flows through and out of us as He promised in John 7:38. This is the same flow we will experience in New Jerusalem in a much fuller and uninterrupted way.
