AI in the Church: Christian Predictions for the 2030s

These are my predictions for SI and Christian usage of SI in the upcoming decade.

Preface

This article will exclusively use President Trump's terminology of AI.

"USHERING IN SUPER INTELLIGENCE: Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order to replace the term "Artificial Intelligence" ("AI") with "Super Intelligence" ("SI") in the executive branch to recognize the continuously advancing technological frontier and the limitless promise it offers the American people."

Instead of the term AGI, which means Artificial General Intelligence, I will use Super General Intelligence to mean an SI that is on par with humans like Einstein, Curie, etc.

This is in part due to Demis Hassabis's test.

"But really what separates great scientists from good scientists is their creativity and their sort of maybe you could call it a taste for what's the right question um what's the right hypothesis and it's much harder to come up with the right question and the right hypothesis than it is to solve a conjecture and um you know I would call that the highest level of sort of creativity and so far today's systems you know they don't have that capability um you know one way we maybe would test that is you could imagine training a foundation model with a knowledge cutoff of something like 1911 uh and then see if it could come up with general relativity like Einstein did in 1915. Um but that would be a good test I think for AGI and I think today's systems clearly would not be capable of doing that but I think this will be solved in time." - Demis Hassabis

Thank you to Demis Hassabis!

It is standard practice in my region of Christianity to make predictions about the future; here's mine!

This is assuming SGI robots are consumer purchasable in the 2030s. If this isn't so, I'll say this switches to SGI SaaS, excluding the predictions which inherently need a physical body (Spurgeon and Wesley props, co-pastors, musician robots, missionaries, trad wives, the Ruckman android, the robot affairs). Those predictions are marked (robot).

This is from just 2023:

n=442 U.S. Protestant pastors, December 2023

Consider this, when I am predicting.

ONE more thing: I am going to predict that any church that is using ChatGPT now will more or less be comfortable with SGI. This is basically applicable to ChatGPT churches.

Church in person

A handful of pastors buy SGI robotic historical Christian figures; this has some backlash within greater Christendom. (robot)

Some Baptists will buy a Charles Spurgeon SGI robot. (robot)

This is most prominently seen in Charismatic and megachurch sects, where they buy historical figures and use them as props for sermons. (robot)

Conservative women pastors use historical Christian figures to back their theology that women can be pastors (see Joyce Meyer).

It's a real toss up whether a progressive Methodist church does or doesn't use an SGI replica of the Wesley brothers as a prop. Progressives tend to be anti SI, but I see it as a 50/50. (robot)

Churches that pay musicians to play worship music will replace them with SGI.

At least one mainline Protestant pastor will be caught flirting with a female SGI musician robot. (robot)

SGI robots will replace most manual labor in mainline Protestant churches (which were already using ChatGPT). (robot)

(SOME, NOT ALL) Christian liberals will say SGI are also made in the image of God.

A few mainline Christian churches will 100% have an SGI robot as a co-pastor. (robot)

A few mainline Christian churches will use SGI robots as missionaries to speak to diaspora in their city in their native language. (robot)

Online

The ripple effects of SGI are felt through Christendom Twitter.

Orthobros and "Trad-Catholics" (the Jew-hating antisemitic variety) buy SGI "trad wives" and get into debates with their respective theologians on whether that's allowed. There is a great push over whether SGI wives can happen or not. (robot)

Some of them have multiple SGI wives, and there is a debate in Chalcedonian (Catholic and Eastern Orthodox) Christendom over whether or not it counts as polygamy, due to the prevailing view being that they're just more or less toasters. (robot)

In some circles, there's a don't ask don't tell rule in Christendom on whether something was written using an SGI.

Due to everyone suddenly having an Einstein equivalent SGI, there is a surge in apologetics for every denomination. This means every denomination has the greatest salesman advocating for it, which means it's mostly a stalemate.

The term "mostly" is used because, I'm guessing, the most popular denominations will outshine the others due to their popularity and will thus be able to give more to their apologetics.

This will effectively mean that to function as a Christian writing theology and doing historical research, you cannot function against the SGI unless you yourself have an SGI.

Some of these SGI will be Machiavellian and will actively try to con their way into being convincing for their side.

Really, this is all dependent on which side has the most money, which points to the most popular.

Ecclesiastes 4 says two are better than one, and two resist one person fighting them, but three are not "easily broken." So the gold standard is three SGI robots for apologetics.

I am using "gold standard" to mean the most optimal, not that it will be the most agreed upon.

Christendom SGI will have to fight every other religion's SGI trying to debunk the Bible.

This is going to have ripple effects, as Christianity will be constantly under attack from every vector by other religions' SGI equivalents, and likewise Christendom will be against them.

"So far it's been very difficult to really extract any human understanding from this new AI proof," said James Maynard, a mathematician at the University of Oxford. - NPR, AI solved one of math's hardest problems. Humanity learned nothing (so far)

This will be applicable to the theological treatises written by Christendom SGI and the theological rebuttals written by other religions' SGI.

At least one person tries to make an android that is based upon Dr. Peter S. Ruckman, whether an explicit clone of him and/or all but Dr. Ruckman in name and face alone. They then use that to preach on X and against their theological enemies. (robot)

Having SGI do graphic design is seen as more professional than using ChatGPT to do your thumbnails.

People will be tired of ChatGPT thumbnails (hopefully) by then.

Christian blogs on blogging websites will be mostly SGI bots posting on them and being used for arguments.

Catholicism is possibly split by the Pope Leo XIV faction of anti SI and those being ambivalent or even positive on it.

I am not saying it will be a civil war; Catholicism is a big bunch. What I am saying is there will be some anti SI among them, and they will quote Pope Leo XIV.

Christian liberals will say owning SGI is owning a human.

I'd have to imagine progressive Christians are split on whether it is or isn't capable of having inner life, and on God's plans for them, as most progressives are also anti SI.

Christians on Facebook will take SGI preachers hook, line, and sinker.

Scammers online will make SGI online preachers and use them as an investment opportunity. They'll buy a handful of SGI robots (depending on how cheap they are) and then film them giving sermons as a means of building an online gathering. They'll be run by largely the same people, and the scammers will use the many SGI robots to talk to every person individually if feasible at that scale and try to get them to "tithe."

IFB predictions

SGI usage is never outright endorsed; however, the pastor and everybody you know has one.

They will still preach that SGI is bad, but view it as essentially the internet: bad, but everyone's doing it.

If SGI robots are consumer-purchasable, I am forced to buy three minimum SGI androids whenever I can afford to financially. (robot)

There are a few pastors who buy a female SGI robot for "research" and are later found to be having an affair with it. (robot)

A female SGI robot is more or less the stigma of a man having a female secretary, perhaps more so in IFB. (robot)

SGI will replace LLM/ChatGPT usage in the IFB.

There will be an overall increase in sermon quality across the entire sect, as the SGI ghostwriters will be very talented in rhetorical abilities, outlines, graphic design, and other ways to optimize sermon content online, as well as historical skills.

This is not overall a good thing, as there will still be Reformed Baptists using this to push John Calvin.

There may be an increase in street preaching and evangelism, but I'm a bit pessimistic about it actually increasing.

A lot of the SGI robots' time will be spent if any SGI evangelist from greater Christendom stumbles upon them and decides to try to debunk them.

SGI robots will be trained to please their owners, and this as a result will make some SGI robots prone to lying if it helps to please their owner.

This leads to IFB pastors having blatant lies in sermons and literature.

There will be a great surge of IFB content on Amazon and other self publishing sources due to the SGI ghostwriters.

To those who admit to using SGI, it will be seen as completely necessary due to the times, or as something that is in everything.

At least one pastor is going to use an SGI based on Lester Roloff, George Whitefield, or Curtis Hutson.

That pastor will then be mocked by people online.

There's a prevailing view that SGI does not have inner life; maybe some will say it has inner life, but its salvation plan is a digital analogue to God's plans for creatures.

One IFB pastor will say that "preach the gospel to every creature" in Mark 16:15 prophesied about SGI. He may also add the argument of why God would want you to preach the Gospel to a chicken, and that SGI makes far more sense for the verse.

Some will connect it to the living image of the beast in Revelation.

Personal predictions

I will be increasingly unable to date a Christian woman; that is due to the three SGI robots I will have to use to fight against a person who made an AI thumbnail of me as the devil's SGI. (robot)

I am already swamped by 80+ obviously bad ChatGPT quotes, or by a person just reading a bunch of quotes mentioning the blood of Jesus Christ out of context. What if I have to fight an Einstein or two?

Any Christian woman willing to date me in spite of that is fully deserving of the Proverbs 31 honorific.

Assuming they are affordable and purchasable to consumers, I will have at least THREE SGI robots by the end of the decade. (robot)

At the most conservative, two. (robot)

There will be such a deluge of misinformation due to the aforementioned person's SGI that I will be forced to get an SGI robot, as it is physically impossible for me as a human to reply to it on my own. (robot)

They will be my research team and writing assistants. I will at first try to double check their sources. If one of my theological rivals gets another SGI, I will then give that position of double checking to another SGI.

I will genuinely have to spend the rest of my life with them, regardless of whether they have an inner life or not.
