Bach’s Cantatas: Encountering Faith Through Music

Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas are a beautiful expression of Christian faith through music. Written primarily for church services, these works combine Scripture, theology, and artistry in a way that speaks both to the mind and the heart. With chorales, arias, and recitatives, Bach’s cantatas invite listeners into a deeper reflection on faith.

The word cantata comes from the Italian cantare, meaning “to sing,” with roots in Latin. At first, it simply meant music that is sung, as opposed to instrumental music like a sonata. By Bach’s time, it had developed into a larger work made up of several movements, combining different musical styles.

One of the most beloved examples is the chorale “Jesus, bleibet meine Freude” ("Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring") from Cantata BWV 147, “Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben” ("Heart and mouth and deed and life").

Bach composed this work in Leipzig for the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Scored for trumpet, oboes, strings, and choir, the cantata consists of ten movements and remains one of Bach’s most cherished works. This particular chorale has been widely arranged for various instruments, making it one of his most recognizable and enduring melodies.

GERMAN (original)

"Jesus bleibet meine Freude,
Meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
Jesus wehret allem Leide,
Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
Darum lass ich Jesum nicht
Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht."

ENGLISH

"Jesus will always be my joy,
My heart's comfort and essence,
Jesus is there through all suffering,
He is my life's strength,
The desire and sunshine of my eyes,
My soul's treasure and bliss;
Therefore I will never let Jesus go,
Neither from my heart nor from my face."
