After this, David asked the Lord, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?”
“Yes,” the Lord replied.
Then David asked, “Which town should I go to?”
“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.
David’s two wives were Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel. So David and his wives and his men and their families all moved to Judah, and they settled in the villages near Hebron. Then the men of Judah came to David and anointed him king over the people of Judah.
Observation (s):
- David enquired of the Lord to confirm the timing of his intended next moves aligned with God’s.
After this, David asked the Lord, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?”
“Yes,” the Lord replied.
- Following God’s answer to David’s enquiry, David posed another question to ensure God’s directives covers the “where” of his next “perfectly timed” move.
Then David asked, “Which town should I go to?”
“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.
- David moved as the Lord directed. Following David’s move, he was appointed king.

Application:
Throughout our lives, we make many different kinds of moves. We change jobs. We change schools. We change relationships. We change friends and acquaintances. We change churches. We change ourselves. Like, David we change addresses.
The “when” and “where” of our critical planned moves must always be verified with God. Before David makes his move, he consults God to verify that the timing is correct. When God responds to his initial question, David asks another question, verifying where God wants him to go. When God’s directives cover these two components, David makes his intended move; relocating his family and his men and their families. As soon as David settles, the next part of God’s plan falls into place. David is appointed king!
We should always consult God to ensure that our intended moves align with His plan. We should not move without God telling us that it’s time. We should not relocate to a place that God has not ordained. The timing and location of our plans must align with God’s for us to see fruition of the next phase of God’s plan in our lives.
