Commentary on Matthew 24: Signs of the end time

Phase 1- Beginning of sorrows

Matthew 24 vs 5For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.

  1. There shall be deceivers 4 – Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you
  2. Many shall proclaim themselves to be false ‘Jesus’ and false ‘messiahs’ and succeed in deceiving many. 5 – For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
  3. There shall be civil wars and rumours of impending wars 6 – You will hear of wars and rumors of wars but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
  4. Nation shall wage war against themselves, and ethnic groups and kingdoms shall wage war against one another 7 – Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
  5. There shall be drought, famines, and recessions 7 – Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
  6. There shall be outbreak of diseases, illnesses, and sicknesses 7 – Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
  7. There shall be earthquakes and tremors 7 – Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

Phase II –Spread of sorrows

  1. There shall be great persecution of Christians 9 – “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.
  2. Christians shall be killed and murdered 9 – “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.
  3. Christians shall be hated throughout the world 9 – “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.
  4. There shall be conspiracies, betrayals, and hatred by Christians against one another 10 – At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,
  5. There shall be upsurge of false prophets who will succeed in deceiving many 11 – and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.
  6. The world will be full of sin and wickedness. Sin shall become institutionalized, widely accepted as the normal and practiced 12 – Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,
  7. Men shall not love themselves 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.
  8. The gospel shall be preached to all nations as a witness 14 – And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
  9. The end shall come.

Phase III – Abomination of desolation (The great Tribulation)

  1. Christians shall flee to mountains, fields, and housetops to escape the great tribulation.
  2. There shall be great tribulation against Christians, never experienced 21 – For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now — and never to be equaled again.
  1. The days of tribulations shall be shortened to save the elect 22 – If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.
  2. False prophets, Christ shall appear doing great signs and wonders; and deceiving many 23-24 – 23 at that time if anyone says to you, ‘look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect — if that were possible.
  3. People shall falsely announce the second coming of Jesus Christ and say He has arrived in a secret place 24-25 – 24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect — if that were possible. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.
  4. The sun shall be darkened 29 – “Immediately after the distress of those days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
  5. The moon shall not shine 29 – “Immediately after the distress of those days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
  6. There shall be falling stars 29 – “Immediately after the distress of those days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
  7. The throne of Satan in the heaven shall be shaken and removed 29 – “Immediately after the distress of those days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
  8. A sign shall appear in heaven heralding Jesus Christ 30 – “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.
  9. All the people of the world shall weep for they know the end has come 30 – “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.
  10. Jesus shall appear in the clouds with power and great glory 30 – “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.
  11. Angels shall appear with him (Matthew 24 vs. 31) – And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
  12. A trumpet shall be sounded 31 – And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
  13. The elect from all the ends of the earth and heaven shall be gathered together.
