Maybe it’s a job that stretches your patience thin, a personal loss that feels like an aching, irreplaceable hole in your heart, or perhaps a goal that seems frustratingly out of reach. These moments test our perseverance.
But what exactly does perseverance mean in everyday life, and how can we keep pushing forward when all we want to do is flop in bed and pull the covers over our heads?
The best encouragement comes from the Bible, the living Word of God, which still resonates powerfully today.
Scriptures show us the crucial role that faith plays in developing perseverance, emphasizing how applying faith to our hardships leads to spiritual growth and maturity.
What Does "Perseverance" Really Mean?
At its core definition, perseverance is steadfast endurance in the face of difficulty or delay in achieving success. It’s not just about the act of waiting; it’s how we wait.
Perseverance involves mindset and attitude. It’s an active display of fortitude that keeps us steady on our path despite unexpected hurdles or the slow pace of progress.
This perseverance is an unwavering determination, a quality that remains steadfast and helps us stand firm.
Why Do We Need Perseverance?

The world encourages us to move at a fast pace and buy the tools, pills, or programs that promise instant results. Whether it's 10 hacks for landing your dream job next week or a plan to lose 30 pounds in ten days, these unrealistic promises can mess with our expectations and distort our timelines.
Truthfully, we can't always control the circumstances or outcomes of life. We all face trials, but God's Word says that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character. Instead of trying to fast-track or escape our problems, we can take a different approach:

Perseverance gives us the grit necessary to fight and win our battles, with the Lord as our anchor and source of hope! It keeps us moving forward through all adversities. What Does Perseverance Look Like?
Perseverance doesn't always look pretty when you're in the midst of the process. We love the end story: the triumph of the single parent who juggled multiple jobs to give their child a better future or the relentless pursuit of an athlete training for Olympic gold.
Be encouraged: the end of the story will be beautiful, and it will make sense, but in the middle, there might be tears, questions, and doubts. Perseverance means you keep going even when you don't feel like it and even if things don't look the way you expected.

Isaiah 40:31
“Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.”
Isaiah offers a beautiful metaphor for spiritual and physical renewal. We can become weary in our daily walk, especially during trying times. But as this verse tells us, we can maintain our hope in God and find ourselves strengthened in His presence, allowing us to soar effortlessly above the turbulence.
Lamentations 3:25-26
“The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. It is good that he waits silently for the salvation of the Lord.”

Micah 7:7
“But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.”

Romans 5:3-4: Suffering Produces Perseverance

Hebrews 12:1

"Consider it all joy, my brothers [and sisters,] when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have [its] perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
How could we possibly respond with "pure joy" when life brings trouble our way? Again, it's part of our maturation process. Suffering produces endurance and endurance produces character. As James says, this endurance leads to a perfect result!
James 1:12
“Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
The "crown of life" awaits those who remain steadfast in their faith despite trials and hardships. When you face trials, you're not alone. Know that your faith produces steadfastness, and your patient endurance will yield an eternal reward.
James 5:11
“We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.”
This verse takes us back to Job's perseverance, holding him up as an example of enduring faith that leads to witnessing God's compassion and mercy. James reminds us not only of the suffering but also of the Lord's character and the end result.
1 Peter 1:6-7
“In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Peter certainly had to face trials in his life. This verse discusses again the joy in difficulties because we are confident in the purpose outcome.
He says the trials that refine believers are similar to the process of refining gold. As we stand firm in difficulty and trust in faith goodness of God, we can endure hardships while praising in the process.
Fasting Builds Perseverance
As you can imagine, the spiritual discipline of fasting strengthens our patient endurance. It doesn't always feel enjoyable at the moment, but it bears incredible fruit. Though it can feel like testing, perhaps even suffering, you can still count it as pure joy, knowing the refining process is necessary.
