First and Forever Hero

Growing up, I, like probably most kids, thought my dad was strong and brave. He could fix anything even if it looked a little different afterward. In my young eyes, Daddy could do no wrong. As a teen, he couldn’t do anything right in my rebellious, questioning eyes. But as a young wife and mother, Daddy became a legitimate hero. He showed up with gas can in hand when I ran out on the side of the road with hot, fussy kiddos in the back seat. I learned how he had joined the Navy during World War II serving aboard a ship in the Pacific. I saw him in a different light as I realized he had risked his very life to make sure America could stay safe and free. I told him he was my first hero, and he always would be.
Dad came home from war, but many did not. It’s important that we honor and memorialize those that gave all. John 15:13 reminds us there is no greater love than one that gives his or her life for a friend.
Jesus loves us and calls us His friends. He was born to live a perfect life so that He could be the sacrifice for all the sins of the world—for all His friends. He gave His life for you and me. Jesus knew His death would not be easy. He knew what was to come, but He humbly accepted the humiliation and cruelty beyond anything we can imagine because He loves us and wanted to fulfill His Father’s will. Valor is courage in the face of great danger. Jesus exhibited honor, courage, and valor beyond any other.
Now Jesus is my forever Hero. I don’t think He minds that Dad was my first. Let’s honor those that show honor and valor but never forget the greatest Hero of all. Let’s honor Jesus with the way we choose to live our lives.
