“The fear of the Lord is knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
– Proverbs 1:7
The sun slowly sank behind the trees as I drove along the winding country road. I was certain I knew exactly where I was, but as I rounded a curve, the scenery quickly changed. As dusk blanketed the rural skyline, anxiety tiptoed across my mind. This doesn’t look right, I thought to myself. Glancing at the car’s GPS screen, a spinning recalculating icon mockingly glared back at me. Oh no! What have I done?
Our Christian walk is much like the narrative above. As free-will thinking humans, we can easily allow our pride and self-righteousness to take the driver’s seat. Or, in my case, my inner two-year-old often jumps into the driver’s seat with a determined mindset of I DO IT!
Most of the time, we deem ourselves worthy and fully capable of every choice we face. Many times, one fails to be prepared for what lies ahead on the road. Proverbs 1:7 states that those who despise wisdom and instruction are fools. I am not sure about you, but being labeled a fool is nowhere on my bucket list.
Fortunately, I surrendered my stubborn, foolish will on that lonely back road. “Lord, it’s going to be dark soon. Do I keep going, or do I turn around? Please help me!” I begged aloud. Within seconds, I arrived at a clearing of pastureland, and the car’s GPS screen suddenly displayed a map of the area. I wasn’t far off the beaten path, but had I continued much farther, I would have been lost deep in the woods…in the dark…all alone. Thank You, Lord, for Your divine GPS.
God’s GPS is foolproof. When we rely on God’s Providential Story, we are never lost. We are never alone. He rewards us with His divine direction that never fails. (Hebrews 13:5) While modern-day inventions have their benefits, nothing—absolutely NOTHING—is greater than God’s Providential Story.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:
1. Who or what is directing your life?
2. Recall a time when your foolish choice needed God’s providential rescue. How did that turn out?
3. How can you rely on God’s GPS for your life?
