God’s Great Mercy unto a Living Hope
Titus 3 speaks of our salvation due to God’s mercy unto an inheritance according to the hope of eternal life. First Peter 1:3-4 is the same, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us unto a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance, incorruptible and undefiled and unfading, kept in the heavens for you.”
By God’s choosing, we “who had not previously been shown mercy but have now been shown mercy” are the people of God (1 Peter 2:10). And all God’s people have a share in New Jerusalem.
New Jerusalem is “incorruptible and undefiled and unfading.” In our view the city is not yet, so it is our hope. But in God’s timeless, eternal view, New Jerusalem is complete in the heavens.
Our hope for New Jerusalem is not by our effort; it is “a living hope” brought forth by the resurrection life. And, although we may pass through trials and difficulties (1 Peter 1:6-7), we “are being guarded by the power of God through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed at the last time” (1:5, 9).
Our eternal salvation is to be in New Jerusalem under the throne of God and the Lamb with the river of water of life flowing out to supply all God’s people.
