How to DIY Wall Quotes on the CHEAP (with video) - Be Whole, Mom

Do you love wall quotes or scriptures on the wall, but don’t have the money to buy them store-bought?  Then, you are going to LOVE this!

Years ago when my oldest kids were smaller, and we were in our house I desperately wanted to get the pretty scripture quotes up on the wall.  But even at that time money was tight and had to go to more pressing things.

So, I figured out a simple way to accomplish my goals without almost any money at all!

And it worked GREAT!

First, though this is a simple solution with very little cost, there is some time involvement.  BUT, those with a DIY flair or frugal leaning are likely already used to that trade-off (time vs. money).  The time is dependent on the length of the quote you want to use for your wall quote, as well as the thickness of the fonts you choose to use and make visible.

Second, you may already have the supplies needed hanging around your house.

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Clear contact paper
• Sharpies or any preferred colors, fine-tipped and medium (or thick if you are planning on thick letters)
• a quote or scripture you want to post
• paper
• printer, optional
• tape

Contact paper is usually about $4 or less a roll (if I am wrong on this let me know…it’s been a while since I’ve purchased it).

In order to create your wall quote you have two options to get your template created:

1. Use your computer and a document program to create a printable of the quote you want to use.  You will have to think about how large you want the quote to be and increase the font size to match the desired size.
2. Hand-write your quote onto paper the size you want it on the wall.

If using the computer, you may want to hand sketch out the idea or look for the final product that you want to create, so if you have different fonts you want to use for specific words to make them pop that you will know which words to make with which fonts.

Here is how the process goes:

1. Design the look of the quote you want to put on your wall – decide which fonts you want to use, which words will be where, the size of the words you desire, spacing, etc.
2. Create a template for the wall quote either by hand or with the computer and a document program.
3. Cut out your template (words) as needed to put them in the order they will need to be to be put up on the wall.
4. Tape the pieces together so that they are the right size and dimensions for the desired wall quote (I recommend holding the taped together pieces against the wall in the spot you are planning to place it to make sure the placement of each word is right).
5. Secure the template to a flat surface (make sure you wipe it clean and dry before laying down the template) and tape it into place so that it does not shift around.
6. Measure the length of contact paper you will need to cover the template.  Use two sheets if needed for a tall and wide quote.
7. Tape the contact paper down over the template so it, too, is held into place.
8. Grab your fine point Sharpie and begin to trace along the edges of every letter you have in your quote.  Make sure to include quotation marks if you have them, and well as any punctuation marks.
9. Once the outline of the quote is traced, you can begin filling in the letters with a thicker tipper Sharpie to hopefully make it go a little faster.  Make sure to go slowly enough not to go out of the lines too much.
10. When your quote is all filled in, you are ready to cut out the extra contact paper surrounding the quote. Try to keep the quote in one large piece that can be put up on the wall, but cut off any extra paper around the edges of the entire quote to minimize the surface area covered with the contact paper.
11. Wipe the wall surface clean and dry.
12. Carefully, peel back the corner of the wall quote and place it in the correct place where you want it on the wall.  Slowly remove the rest of the adhesive while carefully pressing the paper onto the wall, making sure any air bubbles or fold lines are not there.  Go slowly as needed.
13. Enjoy your work!

The beautiful thing about this is that it is easy to remove.  Just pull up a corner of the contact paper and pull it off gently.  I’ve not had an issue with it sticking to wall paint or anything like that, either.

And, there you have it!  Your very own wall quote for next to nothing in cost!
