How to escape to your Garden of Gethsemane

In the busyness of daily life, there are moments when you want a quiet place, a break from the noise outside, and the constant thoughts in your head. When it becomes overwhelming, you might seek solace in your room, find tranquility in a nearby park, or use headphones to drown out the noise and thoughts.

This article is here to help you discover your own Garden of Gethsemane—a place of calm and inner peace. Like Jesus sought solace in the Garden before his crucifixion, you too can find a serene refuge amid life's challenges.

Jesus and the Garden of Gethsemane

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus went there with his disciples to pray. It was a place of quiet, away from the crowds and noise. Jesus knew that his arrest was imminent, and he felt the weight of what was to come.

His disciples were with him, but they were tired and kept falling asleep. Jesus, however, was not afraid. He prayed earnestly, asking God if there was any way to avoid the suffering that awaited him. He felt the immense pressure and the burden of what lay ahead, but he submitted to God's will, saying, "Not my will, but yours be done."

Despite the apprehension about his impending capture and the agony he felt, Jesus found peace in surrendering to God's plan. An angel appeared to strengthen him in this challenging time. The serenity he sought in the Garden came from his unwavering trust in God, accepting the difficult path that lay ahead for the fulfillment of a greater purpose.

Lasting peace

In 1 John 14:27, the verse tells you that Jesus left a gift of peace for you. He said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

This means that the peace Jesus offers is different from what the world can give. It is a lasting peace that can calm your troubled heart and take away fear.

In 2 John 16:33, Jesus assures you that in this world, you will face troubles. He says, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

This verse teaches that enduring peace comes not from avoiding troubles but from being in Jesus. He conquered the world, and by being in him, you can find peace that lasts despite life's challenges.

How to find peace in times of distress

Just as Jesus found peace amid his distress in the Garden of Gethsemane, you too can discover tranquility when faced with challenges. Here are ways how.

Humble yourself before God in prayer

To find peace, much like Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, you can start by humbling yourself before God in prayer. When you do, you imitate his example of surrendering to a greater plan. This act of humility in prayer opens a pathway for inner peace. It is a recognition that, like Jesus, you are not alone in facing challenges.

Find peace in journaling

Consider the practice of journaling. Much like a tool for self-reflection, taking the time to write down your thoughts can help bring clarity and calmness to your mind. By expressing your feelings on paper, you create a space for introspection and a better understanding of your emotions.

Retreat to nature

Another way to find peace is to retreat to nature. Just as Jesus sought the tranquility of the garden before his crucifixion, you can find a sense of calm in natural surroundings. Take a walk in a park, sit by a river, or simply be amidst greenery. Nature has a way of soothing the soul and providing a break from the noise of daily life.

Lay all your fears before Him

As Jesus faced the weight of his impending arrest and crucifixion, he turned to God, expressing his fears and concerns. Similarly, when you lay your fears before Him, you acknowledge a higher power that can provide comfort and guidance.

Seek God’s will, not your own

In the Garden, Jesus prayed, saying, "Not my will, but yours be done." This act of submission aligns with finding peace by prioritizing God's plan over personal desires. When faced with decisions or uncertainties, seeking God's will allows you to release the burden of control and trust in a higher purpose. Just as Jesus found peace in accepting God's plan, you too can experience tranquility by surrendering to the divine will.

Cast all your cares upon Him, make God your rock

Jesus, facing the weight of impending challenges, prayed and cast his concerns upon God. Similarly, when you make God your rock, you entrust your worries and burdens to a steadfast foundation. This act involves acknowledging that God can provide stability and support amidst life's uncertainties.

Accept what you cannot control and believe He will do what you cannot

Acknowledge and accept the things you cannot control. Understand that there are aspects of life beyond your influence. Let go of the need to manage everything. Once you have done that, cultivate a belief that God will take care of what is beyond your reach. Trust in the notion that He will handle what you cannot. This acceptance and faith will help ease your mind and bring a sense of peace into your life.

Breathe in, breathe out

Focus on your breath, allowing it to bring a sense of calmness. Inhale slowly, exhale gently. Repeat this simple act, giving yourself the chance to center your thoughts and find tranquility in the present moment.

Move forward, focus on what is before you

Concentrate on moving forward. Direct your attention to what lies before you, focusing on the present moment. Let go of the burdens of worries that may be lingering from the past or looming in the future. Choose to leave behind those concerns, allowing yourself the freedom to engage fully with the here and now. By moving ahead and concentrating on the immediate, you create space for tranquility and a clearer perspective on the path ahead.

With God in the Garden

A garden is beautiful in its simplicity and harmony, a testament to nature's artistry. The vibrant colors of blooming flowers, the lush greenery, and the gentle sway of leaves create a tranquil scene. The symmetry and balance found in a well-tended garden evoke a sense of order and peace. As you stroll through the pathways, the fragrance of blossoms fills the air, enveloping you in a soothing embrace.

Amidst such natural beauty, the worries of the world seem to fade away, replaced by a calming stillness that rejuvenates the spirit.

That said, when you are feeling distressed, consider retreating to your garden, whether it be the quiet space of your room in prayer or the serene surroundings of a park with nature. Establish a connection with the divine by holding onto your faith in these moments. In the solitude of your room or the midst of nature, you can face challenges with the strength that comes from your belief.

I'm a Christian who sees the church as my second home. Not only were my parents the ones who raised me, but our church elders and members also played a significant role. However, despite attending church every Sunday, I still have some questions regarding my faith. As a writer, the articles I create serve as answers to the questions I've had and continue to have, and I hope they can serve a purpose for others who are searching for the same answers.
