How To Overcome Gluttony? - Raising Zion
Enjoying food, and gluttony are entirely different.
It’s good to love whatever you get to eat, but eating whatever you love can cause overeating and be a result of spiritual issues.
God provides food to all
Food is a basic necessity for all mankind and God provides for all, he is most merciful.
Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever (Psalms 136:25).
Man even ate angels food. When God led the Israelites out of Egypt, He fed them manna daily.
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full. (Psalms 78:25)
Not only do we see God dropping food from heaven, He even fed His own, Elijah, with the help of ravens (1 King 17:4-6).
At the garden of Eden, man did not have to toil for food. It was already watered by God for man’s physical nourishment.
Like our Father provides to all, we too must take care of our brothers and sisters in Christ (James 2:16,17). The New Testament believers had all things in common (Acts 2:44,45).
Gluttony causes spiritual death
Lack of Food can be a cause of worry; worrying is never good. Jesus tells His children to seek God instead of worrying over food because He provides all to those who seek Him.
Jesus was tempted of the same (Matthew 4:1-4). He overcame it all, despite being hungry himself after 40 days of fasting and praying.
Be content with what you have (1 Timothy 6:8) so you can labour for the kingdom of God, everlasting meat (John 6:27).
Put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony (Proverbs 23:2).
Subject your body from excess; be like Daniel (Daniel 1:8) and John the Baptist (Matthew 3:4) who willingly consecrated their lives so God could work in and through them.
May God help us all to be seekers of the bread of life (John 6:35), Jesus, rather than earthly food. Maranatha, praise God and amen!
