How to Win This Spiritual War

“Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” – Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

This verse describes spiritual warfare, the conflict between believers and evil satanic forces. A war is out there, ongoing, and real! The devil and demons use what might seem like innocent tactics to get to us.

Television programs make casual sex seem perfectly natural. After all, everyone is doing it. Video games make violence appealing. Just eliminate whoever disagrees with you. Some authority figures, such as professors, thrive on anti-Christian rhetoric and draw young people away from God’s truths. What can we do to protect ourselves?

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:10-11, NIV)

This armor includes:

* The Belt of Truth. Many dismiss the truth of God’s Word. They insist that truth is relative and differs from one person to another or from one culture to another. Christians, however, believe truth is found in God’s Word alone. The belt of the Roman soldier held the rest of his clothing in place; so we need the word of truth to stabilize our faith.

* The Breastplate of Righteousness. We fight spiritual warfare dressed not in our own “goodness” but in the righteousness given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ. A soldier’s breastplate protected his vital organs, and so the righteousness of Christ protects our souls for eternity.

* Feet Fitted with the Readiness of the Gospel of Peace. The only way to achieve real peace in this world is to understand that Jesus died for our sins. Look for opportunities to help others … children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors–understand this truth.

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation . . . .“ (Isaiah 52:7 NIV)

* The Shield of Faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6)

* Helmet of Salvation. The breastplate of righteousness protects the body while the helmet of salvation protects the mind from doubting God’s goodness. Be wary of any who suggest we must work our way to heaven. Works are the natural outgrowth of our commitment to Christ, but deathbed conversions can save a soul.

* Sword of the Spirit. The Word of God. Read it. Obey it. Live it out so that others see what it’s like to be a Christian.

Pray. Pray for those who try your patience. Pray for those who lack support and do what you can to help them. Pray for your loved ones that they may know the peace that passes all understanding.

Don’t try to engage in spiritual warfare without proper preparation. By wearing the armor of God, we can stand our ground when we enter combat.

Questions for Reflection:

1. Which part of the spiritual armor do you find hardest to wear? How might you strengthen yourself in that area?

2. Spend time praying for loved ones and friends who may not know the Lord.

3. Is there any portion of Scripture you’ve neglected to read? If there is, begin reading it today.
