In Christ, a new creation for the New Year

A New Year again beckons. It is that time of the year when we review the past, hope for the better, and plan concrete steps for an abundant life in the future. But most often, our goals are centered on our earthly self. We think about how to earn more money, start a new career, or have that long-dreamt big vacation overseas or that major facelift.
In contrast, we think little about the feeble state of our spiritual souls. We fail to recognize our greed, selfishness, and the sordid lack of love towards God and others. There is nothing wrong with making our earthly lives better. But not recognizing our utmost need of Christ denies us the opportunity for a joyful acutance and eternal life in heaven.
The prevailing consensus in numerous studies is that resolutions tend to be short-lived and generally ineffective. This notion is primarily attributed to our dependence on self-motivation and selfish resources. The shortcomings of resolutions underscore the reality that, on our own, we lack the inherent capacity to effect enduring change.
This situation poses a challenge for those aspiring to positive transformations. However, the encouraging news is that a genuine, lasting change—eternal transformation and a new beginning—is attainable. The Gospel of Jesus Christ presents a tried-and-true, people-proven pathway to authentic and enduring change.
Embracing the truth of being a New Creation
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" - 2 Corinthians 5:17

When God saves us, we turn into followers of Christ. As children of God, we earn the rights and privileges of true believers.
- Redemption and forgiveness. As a new creation in Christ, you experience the profound benefits of redemption and forgiveness. The past is washed away; you can live free from guilt and shame.
- Eternal life. Being in Christ grants you the promise of eternal life. The assurance of salvation brings hope and peace, knowing that your future is secure in Him.
- Identity in Christ. Discovering your identity as a new creation means understanding that you are a beloved child of God. This realization fosters a sense of purpose, belonging, and self-worth.
- Empowerment by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells within you, empowering you with strength, wisdom, and guidance. This divine presence enables you to navigate life's challenges with confidence.
- Freedom from bondage. In Christ, you are set free from the bondage of sin and negative habits. The transformative power of His love enables you to overcome struggles and live a life marked by righteousness.
- Purpose and calling. God has a unique purpose and calling for each new creation. Discovering and walking in alignment with God's plan brings fulfillment, joy, and a sense of divine purpose to your life.
- Access to God's promises. As a new creation, you have access to the promises of God outlined in the Scriptures. These promises cover various aspects of life, including provision, protection, and guidance.
- Community and fellowship. Belonging to the body of Christ provides a supportive community and fellowship. Sharing the journey with fellow believers allows for encouragement, accountability, and the opportunity to grow together in faith.
- Hope in times of trials. Life is not without challenges, but you can face difficulties with hope as a new creation. Knowing that God is with you and working all things for good brings comfort and resilience during difficult seasons.

Rooting ourselves in the Word
Similar to how a plant derives its vitality from rich soil, we discover sustenance and guidance in the teachings of the Almighty. Delving into the Scriptures enables truth and wisdom to embed itself in our hearts, molding our cognitive patterns and synchronizing our aspirations with His divine purpose. Regular contemplation, reflective reading, and active participation in Bible study are essential avenues for exposing ourselves to the needed change in our lives.
Pruning away the old
Like a vigilant gardener who meticulously prunes withered branches to foster growth, we must confront and liberate ourselves from the weight of past burdens. This process might extend forgiveness not only to others but also to ourselves. It may entail addressing harmful habits and abandoning detrimental perspectives. Releasing the grip on what no longer contributes positively – bitterness, envy, or pride is good. It generates room for the wholesome fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, and peace – to thrive within our inner being.
Reaching for the light
Much akin to phototropic plants naturally pointing toward the sun, we should purposefully incline ourselves toward the light of Christ incarnate. Engaging in prayer, worship, and cultivating connections with fellow believers becomes imperative. These rituals draw us proximately to His glory, clarifying the road ahead and realizing His intended purpose in our lives.
Out with the Old, In with the New

The transformation experienced in Christ transcends a mere passive existence. Instead, it beckons believers to embody the righteousness bestowed through faith actively. The apostle Paul underscores this imperative, urging followers to "put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:24, NIV). This notion entails a deliberate commitment to align one's thoughts, words, and actions with the profound truth of being a child of God.
