Keeping up appearance: What if you are not a model follower?
In the realm of Christian living, there is often a stereotype. Christians should don neat attire, a gentle demeanor, and words steeped in kindness. Do you find yourself fitting snugly into this mold, adhering to the expected image of a Christian? You may embrace the conventional, wearing modest clothing, speaking softly, and acting gracefully.
Yet, you may need to align with this standard Christian prototype. Maybe your story is etched with tattoos, and the remnants of your past choices linger in the smoke-stained lungs from years of youthful indulgence before embracing Christ. Does your appearance defy the typical Christian image? If so, you might feel the weight of expectation. You strive to conform to the accepted model of a follower of Christ.
Transformation may have touched your life profoundly. But what if the external facets resist change? What if the tattoos stay, and the smoky reminders persist? Can you be a faithful Christian without conforming to the expected appearance?
The Lord looks at the heart
In 1 Samuel 16:7, the Lord’s message resonates clearly:
"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not look at his appearance or the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"
Reflect on these words. They cut through the external, emphasizing a profound truth. God's attention does not linger on the outward shell, the tattoos, or the smoke-stained past. No, the focus is squarely on the heart—the internal landscape where true transformation occurs.
Let the weight of societal expectations lift, for God’s standard is clear:
A heart turned toward Him is what matters most.
It is a powerful reminder that, despite external appearances, your sincerity, repentance, and love for God are the transformative elements that truly define your walk of faith.
However, you cannot avoid judgmental stares.
While God readily accepts you for who you are, it is essential to acknowledge that His followers may not always mirror His unconditional acceptance. If you yearn for validation within the Christian community, the potential disparity between God's embrace and human judgment can become a source of genuine concern and anxiety.
In these moments, remember that fellow Christians, though well-intentioned, are only human. Some may unintentionally err by casting judgment based on appearances. It is crucial not to let this sway your understanding of God's acceptance. Humans may falter, but God's love remains unwavering.
Should you encounter those who seem more focused on externals than the heart, do not let their perspectives define your journey. Instead, seek out a church or community that reflects God’s character – a community that extends a warm welcome, embracing you with open arms. There, you will find a place where acceptance aligns with God's grace, allowing you to grow and thrive in your faith without unnecessary burdens of judgment.
With God and the right human circle, you need not feel like constantly keeping up appearances. You show up as you are and will be accepted.
