New Heavens and a New Earth

Both 2 Peter 3:10-13 and Revelation 21:1 clearly present the change from the old heaven and old earth to a new heaven and new earth. This new universe is the environment for “the holy city, New Jerusalem” (Rev. 21:2).

Second Peter 3:10 declares, “the day of the Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the elements, burning with intense heat, will be dissolved, and the earth and the works in it will be burned up.”
New JerusalemVerse 12 presents the same as “the day of God, on account of which the heavens, being on fire, will be dissolved, and the elements, burning with intense heat, are to be melted away.”

In verses 11-12 Peter speaks to us, “be in holy manner of life and godliness, expecting and hastening the coming of the day of God.” We should not merely be waiting for that day but rather living a holy and godly life to hasten that day. This is accomplished by experience of Christ as our life, our daily living.

Such living is not merely a personal matter; it is for the building up of the Lord’s Body. When this building is sufficient, the Lord Jesus will return and His kingdom will be manifested. This is our path toward the ultimate building of God, New Jerusalem.
