Playing the “Who Would Win?” Game
Have you played the game called “Who Would Win?”
Two names are matched against each other in a fictitious fight, and you have to explain why you think one would win.
- Batman v. Superman
- Sylvester Stallone v. Arnold Schwarzenegger
- Godzilla v. King Kong
- George Washington v. Abraham Lincoln
- A kitten v. a baby polar bear
The game is not so much about fighting as it is your skills at persuasion—and not taking it too seriously. A website is even dedicated to it: whowouldwinafight.com.
We’ve all played a version of this game for years:
- Me v. Unemployment
- Me v. Cancer
- Me v. Fear of ______________
Many of us have played a new version this year:
- Me v. COVID-19
We might lie in bed at night, letting one of these scenarios play out in our heads and keep us awake. Even if it hasn’t actually happened to us, we know others who’ve battled unemployment, loss of health, or loss of supportive friends. What if that happens to me?
Let me offer a different perspective. What is the absolute worst thing you could experience? Death and permanent separation from God.
- Me v. Sin
- Me v. Death
You don’t need me to tell you that’s a battle you’re going to lose. But Christ’s death and resurrection changed the scenario.
- Jesus v. Sin
- Jesus v. Death
He was victorious—and He remains victorious. If you have chosen to embrace and follow Christ, His victory over sin becomes your victory over sin. His victory over death becomes your victory over death. You are brought into an unchanging, unending relationship with the Lord of the universe—and nothing’s going to change that. Nothing.
Since Christ can give me victory over my two biggest fears, why should I let anything else keep me up at night? I may face unemployment, but I’m still in an eternal, loving relationship with God. I may face sickness and suffering, but I am still secure in Christ’s love. And even if something takes my physical life, I am resurrected to a far greater life in Christ.
“I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us” (Rom. 8:18).
Since I am in Christ, I prefer to look at my life this way:
- Jesus v. Unemployment
- Jesus v. Cancer
- Jesus v. COVID-19
- Jesus v. Fear of ______________
So what do I really have to fear?
“Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Rom. 8:35,37).
