Praying for the Small Things

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. -- Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

It was a beautiful, sunny spring day. My husband and I went for a drive into the mountains to enjoy the new season. I offered a quick prayer for safety on the drive and said, “Lord, if it is your will, please let me see a bear along the drive.” My husband said, “I think God might be a little busy with more important issues,” as we were heading out. Windows down and a warm breeze blowing in, we made our way along the drive.

Near the highest point, my husband pulled the car over and stopped. He smiled and pointed up into a nearby tree where a small cub scrambled up the tree, its tiny paws gripping the bark as it climbed. I got out of the car and watched for a while from a distance and said a quick thank-you for the special gift. My heart overflowed with praise for the answer to my simple request.

Prayers Deepen our Relationships

That moment reminded me that God isn’t only present in life’s biggest struggles; He is present in the smallest joys as well. God is interested in every part of our lives, not just the enormous problems. Nothing is too small to bring to Him because He desires a close, daily relationship with us. When we share everyday concerns, like finding a lost item, calming an anxious thought, or even asking to see a bear, it builds faith and deepens our connection with Him.

What parent wouldn’t want to do small things that bring joy to their child? Our Heavenly Father is no different. These simple prayers are not a burden to God; they are invitations to stay connected to Him throughout the day. He cares about every detail of our lives, and no request is too small to place in His hands.

Even when the answer isn’t what we hoped for, prayer is still shaping our hearts. It teaches us to trust God, not just for what we receive, but for who He is.

Questions for Reflection:

1. What small request for God have you been hesitant to pray for? Why?

2. What large request for God have you been hesitant to pray for? Why?

3. Think about a time when God provided an answer to you that seemed trivial. How did it make you feel?
