Resurrecting, Renewing our Inner Man

Our regenerated human spirit is in the new creation in Christ. And so is our soul, to the extent that the Spirit mingled with our spirit has spread for the renewing of our mind (Rom. 12:2; Titus 3:5). The rest of our being is still New Jerusalempart of the old creation and its living and habits need to be put off (Eph. 4:22; Rom. 8:13).

The putting off of the old and the spreading of the Spirit are a process, a gradual renewing. Second Corinthians 4:16 encourages us, “Therefore we do not lose heart; but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.”

The decay of the outer man is not merely decrease of physical ability; it also, as one example, includes the decay of memory as we age. But “we do not lose heart.” Why? “Therefore” points to verse 14, “He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus.”

This raising of us is certainly from the physical grave if we die before the Lord returns. Yet I believe it also includes a day by day, perhaps immeasurably small, raising us by the renewing (= resurrecting) of our inner man. This is our road to the city of resurrection, New Jerusalem.

    The Mall or the Manger?

Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
