Seek the New Heaven and the New Earth

We conclude this long series of posts with a short look at Revelation 21:1-2 in this post and the next. Verse 21:1 says, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and the sea is no more.”

New JerusalemIn eternity past God purposed to have a corporate expression that He might be fully expressed and glorified, and for this purpose He created the heavens, the earth, and mankind. After the millennium, the old heaven and old earth will pass away through fire and be renewed into the new heaven and new earth (2 Pet. 3:10-13), into which the New Jerusalem will come for God’s eternal expression.*

Second Peter 3:10 warns us, “the day of the Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away…and the earth and the works in it will be burned up.” Therefore we should turn our attention and our striving from earthly things to heavenly things (Col. 3:1-2), and from temporal things to eternal things (2 Cor. 4:18).

The chorus of a hymn by Helen Lemmel encourages us:
    _____Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
_____Look full in His wonderful face,
_____And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
_______In the light of His glory and grace.
