Shame Keeps Us Hiding, But Grace Calls Us Closer

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (NIV)
Have you ever felt too ashamed to pray honestly? Maybe you did something wrong. You’d sinned, fallen short, and now faced the aftermath of your consequences. Or maybe you felt like you should be better by now. Maybe you even believed that if you just “had enough faith,” or “prayed the right way,” God would hear you. So, instead of telling the truth, you stuff down your feelings.
Sadly, there’s a misconception in Christian communities that we need to “get it together” before we come to God. Instead of telling Him how we really feel, we tell Him what we think He wants to hear. We even believe the lie that if we just had enough faith or prayed the perfect prayer, maybe then He’d answer us. But friends, these thoughts aren’t from God. In fact, they’re rooted in shame. And when we’re covered in shame, we avoid God instead of running towards Him.
As human beings, sin does separate us from God. This is why we needed Jesus to die for our inequities. But grace invites us into restoration with Him. We don’t deserve it, and yet that’s what we receive when we believe in Jesus and have a personal relationship with Him. Because confession has always been and will always be about freedom, not punishment. God already knows your struggles; therefore, He sent Jesus to meet us with truth, mercy, and love.
Friends, grace doesn’t excuse sin, but it does remind us that we’re not beyond redemption. Today, no matter where you’ve been, what you’ve done, or what you’re still struggling with, you can stop hiding and return to God honestly. It will take courage. And it may feel scary. But I assure you it’s worth it. Because instead of meeting you with shame, He covers you in grace. He says, “My child, welcome home.” “Welcome to the place you were created to belong.”
That’s the gift of grace. That’s the gift of forgiveness. That’s the gift He extends to you today.

Question for Reflection:
Is there anything you’ve been avoiding bringing before God? Maybe it’s a secret sin, something you believe about yourself, or a grudge held towards another person. Whatever it is, don’t allow shame, fear, or embarrassment to hold you back. God desires to hear from you as you are, and He cares.
