What should be the Christian’s worldview toward secular culture?

Some will embrace everything that culture offers without reservation. This is a huge mistake because so much of popular thought runs contrary to Scripture.

Others think they can evade culture altogether through isolation. The fact is that this is virtually impossible. We might be able to remove ourselves and our children from our world’s culture, but culture will find us.

Culture shift

In his book Culture Shift, Al Mohler wrote, “We use language, wear clothing, and engage as consumers in a world of continuous cultural invasion. The culture is a vast network of institutions, laws, customs, and language that is a constant part of our life, like it or not.”

In the process of doing this, we sometimes try to live in a Christian subculture. The objective is to go through a day without any contact with worldly things or people.

Invasion

But Jesus has not called us to isolate, but to infiltrate. We are not to evade but invade!

In short, we are to impact culture without being compromised by it.

There’s no question that this is a tricky balance for Christians. As Jesus prayed, “I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They are not part of this world any more than I am. As you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world.” (John 17:15-16, 18).
