The Gold of New Jerusalem is God’s Divine Nature

John saw New Jerusalem and tells us in Revelation 21:18, “the city was pure gold, like clear glass.” Peter declares that the Triune God “has granted to us precious and exceedingly great promises that through these you might become partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4).

New JerusalemThe first intrinsic element of the triune constitution is gold, given by the Father as the basic element (Rev. 21:18b)…. Gold in typology always refers to God’s divine nature, and Peter tells us that we are partakers of the divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4). When…we were born of God, as the begetting Father, He imparted His own nature into our being, which is the gold of the “golden mountain,” the New Jerusalem. The city proper is like a mountain with the height of twelve thousand stadia, and Revelation 21:18 tells us that the city was pure gold.*

We were born of God as children of God (John 1:12-13) having His life and His nature. Now this life needs to grow, to spread, in us. Two contributors to this growth are our drinking the milk of God’s word (1 Peter 2:2) and holding onto Christ as our Head, not being distracted by other matters (Col. 2:18-19). Whenever we open the Bible we also open ourselves to the Lord so that He may nourish us for our growth in Him.

Peter’s last words (2 Peter 3:18) are “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and unto the day of eternity.” Our growth to maturity will manifest glory to our Lord both now and in New Jerusalem for eternity.
