The King Born for Us - Carla D Burnette

With Christmas quickly approaching, let’s pause and prepare our hearts for the true reason of the season, which is Jesus. As we reflect on Jesus coming into this world, let’s turn to one of the prophecies in Scripture regarding His birth.

Isaiah 9:6 proclaims, “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace” (CSB).

This particular passage provides insight into who Jesus is and why He came to the earth. Even though we may be familiar with passages like these, let’s view Scripture with fresh eyes to recapture the wonder and awe for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Note the phrases “born for us” and “given to us” in our key passage. Why was Jesus born for us?

Born to Give Life

John 3:16 provides the answer: ‘“For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life”’ (AMP).

From this verse, we see the depths of the Father’s love for us. He sent Jesus and gave Him to us, so that we may have life. The Father desires for no one to perish, but for all to come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:9).

Born to Save

Another reason why Jesus came is found in Matthew 1:21. In this verse, an angel appears to Joseph telling him to name the child “Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins”. In fact, Jesus’ name literally means “The LORD saves”.

Jesus delivered us from the bondage of sin and death when He died on the cross. He willingly took upon Himself the punishment we deserved, so that we could be set free and reconciled back to the Father (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Born to Establish God’s Kingdom

The final reason for Jesus’ coming is found in one of the titles given to Him in Luke 2:11. In this verse, an angel of the Lord appears to shepherds in the region declaring, ‘“Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord”’ (CSB).

The Bible defines Messiah as “the one anointed by God to deliver His people and establish His kingdom”. From this definition, we see that in addition to delivering us from sin, Jesus came to establish the kingdom of God. When we believe and acknowledge Jesus as our Savior, we become a child of God and inherit eternal life in heaven.

Besides a spiritual kingdom, Jesus will also establish a physical kingdom here on earth when He returns as King of kings and Lord of lords at His second coming (I Timothy 6:15). The phrase “the government will be on His shoulders” from our key passage alludes to Jesus’ millennial reign in this physical kingdom on earth.

Bow in Worship

From our study so far, we see that Jesus came to deliver us from sin and death, so that we may become children of God and have eternal life in heaven. He is our Deliverer, our Salvation and our Life.

Friends, let’s bow down in worship before Jesus, the King who was born for us. Let’s be forever grateful that Jesus willingly left heaven and came to this earth to save us.

Next time, we will study the names listed in our key verse for Jesus. From these names, we will learn more about who Jesus is.

In the meantime, let’s encourage one another with these awe-inspiring truths as we reflect on Jesus’ birth this Christmas season and longingly anticipate His glorious return

Father, Thank You for Your great love for us. May Your Spirit remind us this Christmas season that Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas. Thank You for sending Jesus to rescue us. May we never take this for granted, but be forever grateful. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
