The Privileged Life: Board Games
“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.” 1 Corinthians 9:24
I love games! All kinds of games! Especially board games. It’s so much fun to just turn off the television and dig into a good game of Scrabble, Monopoly, Sequence, Phase 10, or—our family favorite—Farkle dice.
I admit that I get pretty competitive…it’s hard for me to just sit back and let someone else win. And yet, I never feel cheated at the end of a good game, even if the other player gets the Z, Q, J, and X in Scrabble. It’s much more social and engaging than just blankly staring at a TV screen together…or worse, staring at the tiny phone-sized screen and playing against a chip.
Doing some travel soon? Invest in pocket-sized games or travel-ready ones. They help pass the time in airport layovers, riding in the car, or just waiting around for someone to get ready. You connect better with those around you, finding ways to laugh or commiserate. While traveling recently by plane, I taught (after being asked by) the fellow sitting next to me how to play Sudoku…he had never figured it out before. It was a joy to find out more about him in the process.
Jesus met people in the marketplace, met them where they were…He struck up conversations with them, challenging them to think anew about their relationships with God and others. I know missionary pilots who use Farkle dice to interact with locals, connect with them, and earn the right to ask faith-challenging questions.
Create game nights with your family or friends, maybe just for fun or perhaps with a mission in mind…not to win, but in the end to win souls. That would be an awesome way to play!
Jesus, help me to think outside of the box when it comes to sharing Your story and joy with others. Give me opportunities to connect with my family members, friends, or even total strangers over simple fun. Help me remember my end game is to serve You and lift You up! In Your name, Amen.
