The War on Words
Satan is real and so are his temptations. He wants nothing more than for us to get caught in his web of deception. In today’s world of modern technology, Satan uses words to manipulate even the strongest followers of Jesus.
Everywhere we turn we are bombarded with words: media, news, critics, reviews, opinions, posts, interviews, blogs, commentaries, and more. Confusion and contradictions can and do weigh us down. Who do we believe? What do we believe? How do we know what the truth is?
The spiritual battle between good and evil is something we all face. When our words are motivated by evil (Satan) they come from a heart of bitterness, envy, pride, confusion, and hatred. When our words are motivated by good (God) they come from a heart of kindness, patience, mercy, sincerity, love and respect.
How can we use our words for good when the world is filled with so much hatred? Do what Jesus did! He used “His” words. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus quoted Scripture saying, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4) Jesus’ weapon of choice in spiritual warfare was the Word of God.
When battling evil, we do not need to respond in anger, aggression, with negative feelings, or critical opinions. Instead, all we need to do is to submit to God and trust in Him and His Holy Word. This will help us resist the devil, so he will flee. (James 4:7)
Have you used words you are not proud of? If so, I would encourage you to practice the three R’s — recognize, remove and replace. Recognize: acknowledge that you have used sinful, inappropriate words - whether written or thought. Remove: repent and ask God for forgiveness for using evil-hearted words. Replace: rely on God’s power - the armor of God - rather than self to make loving changes.
Words can build up or tear down. They are important and they greatly impact others. Words have the ability to change one’s eternal destination. Proverbs 18:21 states, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Our words matter, and Satan knows this. The war on words is a spiritual battle, and it is a big one. But take heart …God is WAY bigger!
