Unlimited: Jesus is on Mission

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once, they left their nets and followed him.

When he had gone a little farther, he saw James,, son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him (Mark 1:16-20, NIV).

Jesus calls his first four disciples who were all fishermen. Simon and Andrew were in the middle of fishing. But when Jesus asks them to follow him, Mark emphasises that they left their nets and followed him “at once.”

James and John were preparing their nets to go out fishing. Mark highlights that Jesus called them “without delay,” which means with urgency. They also responded immediately, leaving their father and fellow workers in the boat.

Mark says that Jesus called these men while he walked beside the sea. The idea here is that Jesus is a man on a mission. He barely pauses to call these men, and they follow him as he walks on.

Imagine how much poorer the lives of these people would have been if they hadn’t responded right away to the call of Jesus. Imagine if they had said, “Let me think about it for a day or two”!

Jesus is calling you just as he called the fishermen. What is your response? Will you delay?

Eli’s Reflection: The Lord is always calling. There is something that he is calling you to do today. I don’t know what it is, but if you spend some time in prayer right now, he will make it clear to you. Will you respond immediately like the disciples?
