When Faith Is All You Have To Rely On

Most Christians understand that we are called to live by faith. When you ask a handful of believers what it means to live by faith, you’ll probably get a handful of different answers.

There are times when life backs us into a corner, and faith is no longer one option among many. It becomes the only option we have left. What do you do when faith is all you have to rely on?

For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.” Ezra 8:22

When Faith Becomes Your Only Option

One spring day, my neighbor Glenn was getting his boat motor ready for a summer of fishing. He secured the motor to the side of a large barrel filled with water while a group of neighborhood boys gathered around to watch.

Glenn confidently announced that God would help him start the motor within three pulls of the rope. The first pull produced nothing. The second pull brought the same result.

Now everyone’s attention is focused on that third pull. Unfortunately, the motor didn’t start—not on the third pull, nor any other pull that day.

Years later, while preaching, I caught myself beginning a sentence with the words, “Faith will…” I quickly corrected myself and said, “Faith in God will…” There is a difference.

Sometimes we unintentionally place our faith in an outcome rather than in God Himself. Glenn may have sincerely believed God would help him start the motor, but perhaps his focus rested more on getting the desired result than on trusting the Lord.

Faith becomes complicated when we make it dependent upon a specific answer. Genuine faith places its confidence in God regardless of how He chooses to work.

    Ezra’s Moment of Faith

Ezra understood what it meant to reach a place when faith was his only option.

He was leading a group of exiles back to Jerusalem. The journey would be dangerous. Bandits and enemies often attacked travelers along the route. Yet Ezra found himself in an awkward position.

He had already testified to the king about God’s protection. He had boldly declared: “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him.”

Now the time had come to either trust what he had proclaimed or ask the king for military protection. Ezra chose to trust God.

His decision did not come from arrogance or presumption. It came from confidence in God’s ability to care for His people. The situation forced Ezra to rely completely on the Lord.

Many believers have found themselves in similar circumstances. The diagnosis arrives. The job disappears. The relationship falls apart. The door closes.

Suddenly all the plans and resources we depended upon disappear. When that happens, faith stops being theoretical. It becomes personal.

A Lesson Learned on the Mission Field

One of the greatest lessons I learned about faith came during a foreign mission trip.

Our three-year-old son developed a severe throat infection. He needed antibiotics, but there were no medications available where we were staying. Medical help was too far away to reach.

We had exhausted every practical solution we could find. There was no backup plan. No alternative, emergency clinic, or pharmacy. All we had was God.

I call that forced faith—not because we wanted to be there, but because circumstances left us nowhere else to turn.

We found ourselves praying, “Lord, You are either going to intervene, or You are not. Either way, we place our son into Your hands.” That was not an easy prayer.

Whether healing came or not, we still had to trust God. Thankfully, the Lord touched our son and brought healing. Yet the greatest lesson was not simply that God healed him.

The lesson was that God proved Himself trustworthy when we had nowhere else to turn.

Examples of Faith in the Bible

The Bible contains many examples of people who reached similar moments.

    • Elijah stood alone before 450 prophets of Baal. He called upon God to answer by fire from heaven.
    • David walked onto a battlefield armed with little more than a sling and confidence in God.
    • Daniel entered the lions’ den knowing that God alone could protect him.
    • Ezra traveled a dangerous road, trusting God’s hand of protection.

None of these individuals knew exactly how God would work. They simply knew He was worthy of their trust. That’s often when true faith begins.

Don’t Tell God How to Solve the Problem

One mistake many of us make involves giving God both the problem and the solution.

We pray: “Lord, here’s my need—and here’s how You should fix it.” When God doesn’t follow our plan, we wonder why He failed to answer.

But faith doesn’t require us to tell God how to solve a problem. Faith trusts Him to solve it His way.

    • The prophets of Baal never expected fire from heaven.
    • Goliath never imagined a smooth stone would bring Goliath down.
    • We had no idea how God would heal our son.

God’s solutions often look different from what we anticipate, but His wisdom always exceeds our own.

    Faith That Rests in God

When faith is all you have to rely on, you discover something important. Your confidence cannot rest in your circumstances or your emotions. It cannot rest in the outcome. It must rest in God.

The Lord may not always answer according to our expectations, but He never abandons His children. He remains faithful, present, and worthy of trust in every season of life.

Perhaps today you find yourself backed into a corner. Maybe every option has disappeared, and faith feels like the only thing you have left.

If so, remember this: faith in God is never a weak position. It is often the place where we discover His strength most clearly. When faith is all you have to rely on, you may find that God is all you ever needed.

Living by Faith When There Is No Other Option

    • Trust God When You Cannot See a Solution. Faith begins where human answers end.
    • Don’t Tell God How to Solve the Problem. Present your need to Him and trust His wisdom to provide the answer.
    • Remember God’s Faithfulness in the Past. The God who helped you before remains faithful today.
    • Choose Faith Over Fear. Fear focuses on the size of the problem. Faith focuses on the greatness of God.
    • Rest in God’s Sovereignty. Even when you do not understand His methods, you can trust His character.

Lord, thank You for being there when there is no other place to turn. Help me place my confidence in You rather than in outcomes. Strengthen my faith and teach me to trust Your wisdom and timing in every situation.
