Worship Therapy: Just Give Me Jesus - Dr. Dalton-Smith - I Choose My Best Life

Welcome to Worship Therapy!

Worship has been an important part of my healing journey.  On this weekly podcast,  I’ll be sharing songs and artists who have impacted my life with their gifts.

This week we will discuss taking the restlessness of trying to find joy in our accomplishments and material things.  This was my truth for most of my grown-up life and it led me down a path of burn-out and overwhelming stress. When I finally realized the one thing I really needed was to rest in the knowledge of Jesus and all He’s done for me, it set me free to enjoy my life.

Our featured song is Just Give Me Jesus by Unspoken

Lyrics:

I work so hard, tryna open every door
Search near and far, turning over every stone
I close my eyes, instead I find no rest
No rest for a restless heart

All I’ve been chasing, putting my faith in
Let it fade, let it break into pieces

Chorus:

Just give me Jesus (Jesus)
Just give me Jesus (Jesus)
There’s nothing I desire (I desire)
That can’t be found in You (found in You)
You’re everything that I’ve ever needed
Just give me Jesus (Jesus)

Take all my pride, my dreams, my plans
This house I’ve built, on troubled sand
If I gained the world, it will never be
It could never be enough

Chorus

All of my searching, trying to be perfect
All the fears, all the lies I believed in
All I’ve been chasing, putting my faith in
Let it fade, let it fall into pieces
Yeah-yeahh!

Chorus

WORD OF GOD

Read Matthew 6:31-33

This passage share how we can overcome worrying about the future:

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ~ Matthew 6:31-33

Now consider the words of the song Just Give Me Jesus. We often spend more time worrying that worshiping. When we focus our attention first to God and to the things that are important to Him, like love and compassion for others, we position ourselves to receive everything we need.

Today’s Therapy Session

  1. It’s good to have dreams, goals, and plans, but too often we allow ourselves to become enslaved to our ambitions.  In the process, we lose a piece of ourselves. We become disconnected from our highest heart desire, which is usually the foundation of our dreams, and instead switch over into a shallow pride-based foundation. The goal is no longer to be live out our God-given purpose and to glorify God with our gifts. The goal of a prideful heart is simply to appear successful and to not fail.  The end result of striving for perfection and living for self can only be emptiness. Have you ever experienced the hopelessness of chasing after things of little significance? When did you realize that you were chasing the wrong thing?
  2.  In Just Give Me Jesus, it opens with verse 1 stating “I close my eyes, instead I find no rest. No rest for a restless heart.” Restlessness is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and be restored.  I’ve spent the majority of this year sharing with audiences all over the world about God’s plan for rest and why it’s vital in today’s society. The recent deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain are just two examples of how highly fruitful people can get to the point of feeling life is pointless. They were successful at using their gifts to bless others, but it’s just as important to become one who can feast on the gifts God gives to bless you. One of those gifts is the gift of His son Jesus. Take a moment today to think about those things that cause you to feel anxious and restless. What things have you been putting your faith in? Let today be the day you shift your focus to Jesus and all He accomplished on the cross.
