(If you ever have to toss a coin between Chrysostom and Origen, save yourself the trouble; Chrysostom was a soulwinning, Bible-preaching missionary. Origen was a Platonic Arian who devoted his life to destroying the Textus Receptus.)Dr. Peter S. Let us define all three soteriologies. 1. Don Nesbitt. The Lord put it on my heart to call him the Lord's bloodhound. (Coined by Vincent Strycula) Don Nesbitt teaches salvation is a gift that had to be accepted by believing and asking God. Salvation to him was a two-step formula."I...
Introduction Few questions in patristic theology are as contested, or as consequential, as the relationship John Chrysostom draws between faith and works in the appropriation of salvation. Modern interpreters tend to read him through one of two lenses. The first, favored by contemporary Eastern Orthodox writers, treats his more process-oriented...
There is an idea in Roman Catholicism and modern Orthodoxy that the thief on the cross was saved by faith alone, but it was extraordinary. It was an edge case; it happened one time, but it was purely an exemption. But, I have to thank Brother Don Nesbitt, the Lord's bloodhound...
"He who hath redeemed thee, hath shewn thee what He would have thee do. He would have thee be instant in prayer, He would have thee ponder in thy heart the blessings thou art praying for, He would have thee ask and receive what His goodness is longing to impart....
The preceding essays in this study have argued that John Chrysostom held salvation to be received immediately, through faith and a verbal calling upon Christ, and subsequently maintained or forfeited according to the life that follows. That argument has so far left one body of evidence untouched: Chrysostom's own statements...
There are two views of Romans 10 leading to the 4th century.1. It is a private confession to God, where a sinner beseeches God for salvation. This view is espoused by John Chrysostom's teacher."Necessarily he set forth 'those who call upon him.' For God does not give grace indiscriminately, and...

A common move in contemporary apologetics is to grant that John Chrysostom uses the phrase faith alone, sometimes affirmatively and sometimes critically, and to conclude from the critical instances that his affirmative use of the phrase must be read in a sense compatible with the Council of Trent. One proponent...
The claim that John Chrysostom denied justification by faith alone is common enough to need a direct answer, and the answer requires first being precise about what is being denied. The Catholic Catechism distinguishes justification, the beginning of salvation, from salvation in its completed sense, and holds that justification requires...
A widely repeated claim holds that John Chrysostom denied justification by faith alone. The evidence usually offered is a single sentence from his thirty-first homily on the Gospel of John: that not even from the promise of eternal life to the one who believes do we assert that faith alone...
It has been said that John Chrysostom and Dr. Peter S. Ruckman do not agree on theology. However, this has been shown to be false by a great multitude of independent investigations. This is their views on Romans 10, which reveals their own soteriology. The Lord put it on my heart to...
Romans 10:9-10 sets out what appear to be two distinct conditions for salvation: believing with the heart and confessing with the mouth. Commentators have not agreed on what the second condition requires. Ambrosiaster read the confession of Romans 10 as a public act, a profession made before other people. This...
