The Trinity

Huge thanks to our contributing writer Adeoluwa for his thoughts and insights shared on the Trinity and the person of the Holy Spirit!

Preface
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as just as sweet”

– Shakespeare

A name might do many things: it might be descriptive, it can be authority, it might be used as an identifier. With God, His name describes Him, it identifies an aspect of His nature, it will bring to bear His power if rightly used – that would mean His name could be wrongly used. Yes it can. One of the ten commands given on Sinai pertains to the Name. Maybe Shakespeare is right; earthly names are probably mostly of minimal value – replaceable and subject to change with little impact on the name bearer. The name of God, however, is called Holy – separate, unlike other names, of a different quality, of a different essence, of the most excellent essence actually. If this is true, what shall we discover from the authority of Scripture on the person of God through a study of His names?

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The third person of God, The Spirit of Truth, The Helper…..

Is the Holy Spirit a person or an entity?

God is not power impersonal. You might notice that His three persons are relatable, i.e, their presentation (or revelation) to mankind is a call (an invitation) to relationship. You may call Him personable.

The Father –

That God is father is so simple and at the same time almost incomprehensible. So mind-boggling is it that the Jews are willing to attack Jesus when He calls God His father. The Father has children, loves his children, wants to spend time with His children and be willing to have time spent time with Him – almost incomprehensible, that God is father. That he wants to Father his children, to teach them of Himself, to grow them up into His person, into his manner and method of doing things. Perhaps there might be more interactions, father to daughter, father to son, surface and intimate, laughter and sorrow, learning and growing, but all the time together.

Jesus –

That God so loved His children, that He would leave glory and beauty beyond imagination, to match colours (skin) with man. That He would leave majesty indescribable to show up on earth in the garment of flesh, to look like His children, so that they might look to Him and see His heart for them. That He might be with them, and take the punishment for them, so that they might get the opportunity to have unhindered interaction, fellowship, communion with Him, as He had decided in the beginning.

Spirit –

That we are not as orphans after Jesus went up to heaven, that we may still while even on earth have Him with us. The Spirit of God is God in us for us, so that we may intermingle with the divine. He speaks, He teaches, He comforts, He teaches, He reminds, He leads. He leads through the way opened by the Son to the Father, so that we may intermingle with the divine. Not just any divine, but the Father of spirits, the Father of lights. Through His Spirit, we may have fellowship with Jesus the Son and the Father, with God who is One and three persons.

All social intercourse between human beings is a response of personality to personality, grading upward from the most casual brush between man and man to the fullest, most intimate communion of which the human soul is capable….. The continuous and unembarrassed interchange of love and thought between God and the soul of the redeemed man is the throbbing heart of New Testament religion.

Mo’s notes:

As we can see we can relate with the different aspects of God’s nature and the trinity because God’s love for humanity is so supreme and so grand that He has catered to all facets of our needs. This God desires an intimate and deliberate relationship with us. Whether He shows up as El Roi, Abba, El Shaddai, we get glimpses of the God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit in these characteristics of God. Our response should always end in worship and reverence for such an infinite God that loves us so much.

Our end goal will always be Worship. That is what we were made for and that is what our purpose is on earth and beyond. So, no matter which nature of God resonates with you, I pray we are all inspired and reminded that our worship and devotion is what God requires.
