In the morning, I feel fresh, inspired, and ambitious. I tend to crank out these lists. I thrive on productivity. When you finish something, doesn't it feel good to cross it off a list?

And yet, our strengths can also be our weaknesses. Because I’m driven to go-do-accomplish, this morning, my lists overwhelm me. I’m pulled in too many directions. My mind scattered like my desk full of lists. It’s difficult to focus. So, I pray.

Calm me, Lord. 

Quiet my noisy thoughts so I can hear your heart. 

And enter your Holy Place.[1]

There, I hear his still small voice.

You are placing importance on things unimportant.

Before the work, Peggi, comes you—your heart, mind, and spirit. 

Until our hearts are right, our actions are simply noise, godless chatter. But when we draw near to his heart, our hearts transform. Our minds think his thoughts. Our spirits still in his peace. Priorities change. Everything looks different. 

The voice saying, “Unless you accomplish, you’re worthless,” is silenced. I am loved. I am accepted. I am embraced by a God who cares for my heart. I don’t need to conquer a list to feel good about myself. Everything I do—even vacuuming—becomes holy work. For Jesus is with me. 

Avoid godless chatter,
because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
2 Timothy 2:16 NIV

When we’re pulled in many directions, stretched thin, and overwhelmed, remember—heart before action. Draw near to Jesus. One thing is needed.[2] Avoid god-less chatter. Make it a God-full day!

Dear Father-God,
Our minds and hearts are easily distracted.
In a world of godless chatter,
Help us focus on the one thing we need—You!
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

If you try to seize the day, the day will eventually break you.
Seize the corner of his garment and don't let go until he blesses you.

Rita, Mark and son Welcome to  Real Life . Mark and Rita fell in love, married, and had two children. Then, Mark met Beth. They ended up having an affair. Mark left his family and married Beth. Eight months later, Mark had a life-altering stroke. This is Beth and Rita’s story of grace.  Beth   I made a decision to accept Jesus as my Savior when I was a young teenager. However, I didn’t really know what that meant. I didn’t understand salvation or grace. I knew God, but kept my distance from him.  I felt like I was too far gone. I wasn’t worthy of his forgiveness. When I met Mark, I was rebounding from a long, unhealthy relationship. Ironically, what drew me to him was the way he interacted with his family. Welcome to Real Life. Do you need courage today? Grace Church women feigning anxiety during a tornado alert. On the morning I began to read the book of Joshua , I woke up feeling anxious. I have suffered through a few bouts of anxiety/depression in my adult life. Lately, I’m battling it again. In the words of Dr. Timothy Keller, “I’m addicted to a high level of productivity.” I pile on projects and responsibilities until I overload. Then, I feel overwhelmed, anxious, can't sleep, etc. I've learned to view these symptoms as God’s check in my spirit: It’s time to back off and chill out, Peg. As I read God’s encouragement to Joshua, I knew his words were for me as well: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9 NIV). Joshua was justifiably anxious. Moses, the awesome prophet—who stood up to Pharaoh, called plagues down on Egypt, and led Israel out o
