Chasing Away the Things That Scare Us

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” – Psalm 23:4

My kids tend to be scared of quite a few things. From dark shadows to eerie sounds, if it’s something that’s out of the ordinary, they will run and hide or scream, and sometimes do both. No matter how many times I try to convince them that whatever it is that’s causing such a ruckus in their little heart isn’t going to harm them, simply because I’m here with them, not to mention Jesus is too. Once their little minds and hearts come to the realization that everything is really going to be ok, then they’re free of the “scary thing” and all is right in the world once again.

Most of us, if we're honest, are frightened by the things that worry us - health, finances, work, church, and even the ones we love. The world can be a daunting place, especially when life takes an unexpected turn and we find ourselves facing challenging circumstances that are often beyond our control. It can be an unwanted health diagnosis, a wayward child refusing to come home, or just not knowing how to make ends meet with the little we have. Throughout our lives, there are many seasons that can threaten to end us, to destroy our hope. There is, however, good news! We have someone who is faithful, even in the valley.

In Psalm 23:4, David expressed his own experience of walking through dark seasons that threatened his very existence. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” The irony here is that “death” is just a shadow. David is not threatened and is not at risk because he is surrounded by the One who is with him. He does not allow his fear of being harmed to control his heart even when facing "death." Rather, he trusts His Shepherd, His God, to protect him.

David’s declaration gives us followers of Jesus hope when facing our own dark seasons. We don’t have to drown in fear or let our hearts be afraid of whatever threatens our hope. Instead, we too can respond and remember that God’s presence is our protection. Because the One who is with us is greater than the threat that is in front of us.

Yes, we will go through valleys. Yes, we will face hard things that will try to kill our hope. Even though the world can be scary, we can trust the One who has overcome it. He is with us.

Whatever threatens your hope today, friend, look to Jesus, the Good Shepherd. In His arms, you are always safe!

Question for Reflection:

Is there a situation in your life where your hope in the Lord is being tested? If so, read and journal through Psalm 91 and write down specific ways the Psalmist describes God’s protection. Then read through it outloud inserting your name in the Psalm. Finally, thank God for His faithful protection over your life.
