Conformed to the Image of God’s Son

Posts in recent weeks have been on growth of the Lord’s life in us for God’s New Testament building and for preparation of the bride of Christ. The building and the bride are two aspects of the one goal of God’s purpose, New Jerusalem “the bride, the wife of the Lamb” (Rev. 21:9-10). The building is for God’s expression and the bride is for Christ’s satisfaction.

New JerusalemRomans 8 speaks about our pathway to this goal. Verses 29-30 present the steps of God’s foreknowing, predestination, calling, justification, and then jumps to glorification. Between justification and glorification, verse 29 presents our being “conformed to the image of His Son.”

This conformation is for our corporate expression of God, and it is accomplished by His life growing in us. The aspect of life is clear because the result of conformation is that Christ “might be the Firstborn among many brothers”— all having the life and the image of God’s family.

We were born humanly in Adam and have been reborn in spirit to be these many brothers and need to mature. First Corinthians 15:49 describes our maturing to conformation thusly: “even as we have borne the image of the earthy [Adam], we will also bear the image of the heavenly [Christ].”

The outcome of the conformation is our maturity in life and the result is the full expression of God in New Jerusalem with the glory of God filling the city and shining forth through Christ (Rev. 21:23).
