How Job's relationship with God inspires resilience

It is easy to feel discouraged and give up hope when things don’t seem to go your way.

However, there is a character in the Bible who can teach us something or two about resilience, even in the face of extreme adversity.

His name is Job, and his story is an inspiring example of how a strong relationship with God can help us overcome the most challenging obstacles.

The Story of Job

The book of Job in the Bible is about a man named Job who lived a good and wealthy life in the land of Uz, modern-day Saudi Arabia. 

Even though he was not an Israelite, Job was known for being righteous and godly and very rich by the world’s standards. 

Job was a wealthy man with ten children, many servants, and thousands of livestock. He was the most remarkable man among all the people of the East. 

He had everything he could ever need or want. His sons were also rich and would annually invite their sisters to partake in lavish feasts lasting for days.

According to Job 1:3, “He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.”

Job also served as the family priest, and he feared God so much that he made sure his children were purified following the feasts in case they sinned against God. 

He would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking that perhaps his children had sinned and cursed God in their hearts.

Job’s life was perfect until Satan challenged him. Satan believed Job only feared God because God had given him so much. 

If God took away everything Job had, Satan was sure Job would curse God to His face.

Job’s Sufferings

One day, Satan appeared before God and challenged Job’s faithfulness. God then allowed Satan to test Job’s faith by taking away everything he had. One day, Job lost all his children, livestock, and servants.

Job was very sad when he heard the news. He tore his clothes and shaved his head to show his unhappiness. 

Even in sadness, Job worshiped God, saying, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. May the name of the Lord be praised.”

Despite his significant loss, Job remained faithful to God and did not blame Him for his suffering. 

He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Satan did not stop there. He afflicted Job with a terrible disease that caused him to sit in a heap of ashes, scratching his body with pottery pieces.

Job was in so much pain that he wished he had never been born.

His wife was very upset about what had happened to them. She told Job to “curse God and die!” 

Still, Job knew that this was not the right thing to do. He replied, “Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?” Job did not sin in what he said.

Moreover, Job’s three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, heard of his suffering and came to comfort him. His friends sat with him for seven days and nights.

They thought they knew why all these hardships had befallen him. They believed that Job must have done something wrong to deserve such punishment from God. Thus, they advised him to confess his sins and ask for forgiveness.

However, Job believed he hadn’t done anything to deserve such suffering.

He could not understand why these terrible things were happening to him, even though he had always tried to live a good life.

Job felt confused and started questioning God’s fairness.

God’s Response

In the end, God spoke to Job and revealed his majesty and power. Job realized that he had spoken out of turn and repented of his words.

God restored Job’s fortunes and gave him twice as much as before.

In response to Job’s sufferings, God spoke to him in a whirlwind and taught him valuable lessons about His sovereignty and wisdom.

Resilience means being able to bounce back from tough times. Job’s story shows us that he never gave up, even when faced with unimaginable hardships.

He lost his wealth and health; even his friends turned against him.

Instead of giving in to despair, Job stayed strong and held onto his faith.
